INTRODUCTION

This first module provides students with an introduction and increased awareness of the key
concepts and principles relating to Promoting Health and Well Being within contemporary
care practice. By providing an opportunity for students to assimilate theory and practice the
holistic assessment, management and inter-professional care of this client group will be
explored in its broadest terms and applied to any patient, in any setting. This module will
introduce concepts such as key determinants of health, examine factors such as culture and
the impact that this has upon health and illness within a multitude of settings, examine
health assessment and promotion and relate directly to current government long-term
drivers to create a wellness service and to strengthen policy locally and nationally.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS

THIS MODULE AIMS TO:


Develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of factors contributing to the healthy
individual within the community and help them consider the contexts in which individuals
make health decisions and choices.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Ref A. Students should be able to describe:

1 The key aspects of contemporary health promotion and health education.

2 How health inequalities impact upon public health at a local and national level.

COGNITIVE SKILLS

Ref B. Students should be able to:

1 Demonstrate skills to devise and promote individual and shared decision making to promote health and health
equality when caring for adults, children and young people and service users who access mental health and
learning disability services.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND ATTITUDES

Ref C. Students should be able to:

1 Identify the care needs of patient groups with multifaceted public needs from all fields of care practice in order to
monitor care and practice to facilitate and promote change across the life span in all health care settings including
physical, mental and learning disability services.

GENERAL TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

Ref D. Students should be able to:

1 Apply a range of effective interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills in order to promote the health of
adults, children and young people with a variety of health promotion needs.

MODE OF ASSESSMENT

FORMATIVE:

Reflective account: Students will write a 500-word synopsis relating to a particular public
health topic.

SUMMATIVE:

Component: An individual power point presentation between 5 – 10 slides + 1000-word


summary of your key learning points about your chosen subject (100% of Module Grade)

You will identify one of the following topics and discuss how this will impact on the health of
the population and what we do to try to reduce harm. (The student can focus at a National
or Local level). The following are examples: Smoking, Obesity, Substance Misuse, Breast
Feeding, Mental Health, Immunisation. You may select any other topical Local or National
initiative.
