Recreation includes all of the pursuits people make for the purpose of reviving
their bodies and brains and adding interest and enjoyment to their free time. It is an activity
that individuals like doing in their free time and that they acknowledge as having socially
beneficial qualities. Contrary to leisure, recreation is associated with being ethically
acceptable to both the individual and society as a whole, thus we plan for those activities
in that environment. A feeling of contentment and well-being in a person’s life leads to the
emotional condition known as recreation. It is characterized by a sense of
accomplishment, mastery, thrill, acceptance, success, and personal worth. A favorable
self-image is strengthened by it. The desire to engage in recreation is a reaction to an
aesthetic experience, the accomplishment of individual goals, or good comments from
others.
Leisure is the spare time that people have to rest, relax, and enjoy life when away
from their regular duties (such as work and household chores). People engage in
recreational and athletic pursuits during their free time. It is a course of action based on
open awareness, freedom of choice, and self-determination that is attained through the
enhancement of the sense of significance and experience of the activities, such as
reading, sports, climbing, social interactions, chit-chatting, or shopping. Individuals’
physical and mental health can be enhanced by engaging in leisure activities, which also
have the importance of regulating the body and mind, reducing life’s stress, and offering
a pleasurable experience.

Different Types of Recreational Activity

1. Physical Recreation
Physical exercise done for fun, to improve health or morale. Physical recreation
has a generally smaller organizational structure than play but is typically more purposeful
and planned. There are some highly competitive, organized sports that people play for

Athletics which includes, running, jumping, throwing, biathlon, triathlon, and decathlon.

and social advantages they provide. Examples are community trips, social gatherings,
movie nights, blogging, study groups, etc.
