Sapang Uwak High School, the school situated at the central area of the
barangay, caters almost 100% of indigenous learners – commonly known as Ayta-
Mag-Antsi. Most of the community still embraces and practices their traditional
marriage- the tribal marriage, together with their ancestral beliefs and customs. It is
customary to marry someone from a different ethnic group, so as to widespread their
ethnic race and their family names as well. Elders and parents had given high value to
courtship and viewed this as significant step to marriage. As the early courtship
became prevalent among our teenage learners, this often lead to pre-marital union
following their dowry system. As the teen couples had united and started their own
family, many chose to stop schooling and prefer to work and earn for a living,
especially if the female mate got pregnant at her early stage. These great
responsibilities given to the inexperienced couples often toiled them and unable to
produce a good quality of living. This cyclical method of union really brought a
depressing impact among the teens and to their performance in school.
