Introduction
A school will always need certain supplies for students and staff in the building. There
are different ways to get these supplies, and it is up to the administration to determine how to
obtain those materials. I spoke with Lori Blevins, principal at Oceana Middle School, and
Karina Paynter, the CIS (Communities in Schools) Coordinator for Oceana Middle School.
Community Strategies
Communities in Schools is a program that has been created by West Virginia’s First
Lady, Kathy Justice. The purpose of this program is to have someone in each school building
that will keep in contact with the community and students’ families. They are to make sure they
have everything they need and to have contact with anyone in the community that would like to
give back to our school. Mrs. Paynter is in charge of collecting donations that our school and
families can use. She is also in charge of keeping in touch with the community and organizing
Mrs. Blevins uses the strategy of word of mouth to keep in contact with the community
and families. She also uses social media. She allows others in her building to run the social
media pages.
Ethical Responsibilities
Both of them mentioned that it is a best practice to be transparent about what you do with
the resources that are gained from others. We always post on social media pictures of students
when they receive items. We are a PBIS school which means that our students receive a lot of
items that are donated or purchased via the school budget. It is the administrator’s responsibility

to make sure that donations have been accounted for, and paper work is completed to ensure that
the items have been accounted for and have gone to students.
I plan to utilize these skills that I received from the assignment for future practice. PSEL
standards 2 and 8 are utilized in this assignment. PSEL Standard 2 states, “Effective educational
leaders act ethically and according to professional norms to promote each student’s academic
success and well-being.” (National Policy Board for Educational Administration [PSEL
Standards], 2015, p. 16) This standard is aligned because of the nature of conducting
organization with the outside community and keeping the students’ well-being intact. Making
sure students have what they need in their home in order for them to be healthy and safe and
PSEL Standard 8 states, “Effective educational leaders engage families and the
community in meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial ways to promote each student’s
academic success and well-being.” (PSEL Standards, 2015, p. 22) This standard is aligned for
the same reason as standard 2. However, it focuses more so on the connections of the
