Lesson Three

Parts of the Brass Instrument

Objective: Students will identify parts of the brass instrument (mouthpiece, valves, bell, slide
(trombone only))

ENTRANCE: Sol Mi La Echos

Play doggy doggy (get through more turns) 10 minutes ish


One student will sit in chair with their eyes closed. The teacher will choose one other
student to sing the solo part. The class will sing the song and the chosen student will sing the
solo. The student in the chair will guess the soloist. This activity assess students singing.

Using a visual presentation and live examples, the teacher will help student identify
the key parts of a brass instrument and what they do, asking students prompting questions
throughout (what do you think this does, would a bigger instrument have a smaller mouthpiece
or a bigger one, how buttons are there etc)

Assessment: Can students identify parts of instrument? teacher will point to parts on live
example and have students identify them (what part is this think about it 321 answer)

Start “Ridin’ the Rails” Dance

Students will stand in a circle while “Ridin’ the Rails” plays. The teacher will perform various
beat keeping movements (patting legs, tapping head, tapping feet, etc) and students will copy.
This will help students practice keeping beat and get familiar with the song before learning the
choreography.
