About Bain and Company

Job Description:
Bain associate consultants (ACs) are the heart and soul of our organization. At Bain, you will
be our frontline in developing powerful insights as well as driving results for our clients. We
invest heavily in our ACs. That investment pays off, not only for Bain. A large number of our
ACs become business leaders inside of our firm and across industries.

ACs are generalists who work with case teams and are exposed to a wide variety of industries
and capabilities. On each case, ACs find the right information, create and interpret analyses,
and present their findings to case teams and clients. Their work becomes the basis of the
team's strategic recommendations. As ACs become stronger contributors to their teams, they
gain more client contact and broader strategic development responsibilities. More than just
"analysts" who analyse and report data, ACs are core to how Bain generates results for clients.

Responsibility and learning

As a Bain AC, you get the chance to make an impact right away. You're the one who finds the
critical information, develops high-quality analysis and assesses the most pressing issues our
clients face. You also share your insights and recommendations with your team and the client.
In short, we expect and need you to make a difference. Throughout your time as an AC, you'll
learn, be stretched, and grow at an incredible pace. In addition to hands-on experience during
client engagements, regular, worldwide, formal training programs will teach you the broad skill
set you need to succeed as a business leader.

But perhaps the most profound learning experiences come simply from interacting with your
colleagues. Bain people represent the best and the brightest of the consulting industry.
Working closely alongside your team and benefiting from informal mentoring, you'll quickly fill

look beyond the numbers and breakdown the case further in a MECE manner.

There was a resume based shortlist along with a Buddy Process and a Deck round.
Deck Round:
● A problem statement is released after the company PPT for making a presentation
deck. The deck is usually 6-8 pages long and some basic pointers are given on what the
decks should include.
● The deck round is highly eliminative whereas the resume shortlisting isn't given as
much weightage.
● Shortlisting criterion wasn't mentioned but usually it is product sense, logical thinking,
ability to prioritize etc, which is also expected in the product interviews
No of interview rounds - 2
Interview: Both rounds consisted of three parts: PI, Case and Questions for the interviewer. At
each stage a candidate will be tested on communication, structuring, logical thinking, product
sense, creativity and articulation
PI questions included "Tell me about yourself", "Why Product Management", "Why Flipkart"
etc.

Case Questions were round dependent, an example for a product design case was "As a PM at
Whatsapp, how would you improve it for its users"

Suggestions:
● Make good use of the Buddy Program. Start early and stay focused.
● Practice basic HR questions.
● Make a structured analysis.
● Participate in a large number of case competitions (will help you get noticed)
● Startup experience and good internships count. The fields of your internship doesn't
matter as much, but you should be able to tie in all your professional experiences to
frame the answer for why you want to pursue a particular career path.
● Additionally, interns with startups, VCs, etc help you with first hand experience with
some products and services. This can help you in bringing more nuanced insights and
suggestions to your case rounds
● General awareness goes a long way in case interviews since it helps in narrowing down
broader problem statements by quoting general trends in different industries. Read
Product/Tech Blogs from time to time.Ken, YourStory, Stratechery, ProductHunt, etc.
● Good CG is valued.
● PoRs are important.
● Try establishing a rapport with the interviewer. All the case interviews should feel like
conversations and cases should be solved by incorporating the inputs from your
interviewer to make sure the outcome is a collaborative effort.
● Resume: Try to start at least 3 weeks before resume submission deadline
● Case Interviews: Depends on the candidate, but starting by late July/early August is
ideal to get enough time to practice and course correct at a good pace
● Deck: Refer to previous year's problem statements but don't start preparing decks until
the actual PS is released
● PI part: Start around late October/early November. Case interview practice comes in
very handy for this part as well to prepare structured answers.

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH

Business Analysts join our offices and practices (e.g. Digital, Marketing & Sales, Operations,
etc.) around the world to work in teams and directly with our clients. When you join McKinsey
as a Business Analyst (BA), you are joining a firm that will challenge you and invest in your
professional development. In this role you will work on the best teams to help the best
organizations in the world – in private, public, and social sectors – solve their most difficult
problems. You will also work with many experts, from data scientists and researchers to
software and app designers. If you are interested in joining a specific practice, please indicate
this in your office/practice preference (combinations are possible). To learn more about how we
help our clients and where you fit in, visit our careers site.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
You’ll work in teams of typically 3- 5 consultants, playing an active role in all aspects of the
client engagement. This includes gathering and analyzing information, formulating and testing
hypotheses, and developing and communicating recommendations. You’ll also have the
opportunity to present results to client management and implement recommendations in
collaboration with client team members. You’ll gain new skills and build on the strengths you
bring to the firm. Business Analysts receive exceptional training as well as frequent coaching
and mentoring from colleagues on their teams. This support includes a Partner from your local
office or practice assigned to you to help guide your career as well as several weeks of formal
training in your first two years as a Business Analyst. Additionally, you’ll receive guidance and
support from your local office in the selection of client projects, helping you to develop your
skills and build your network. We view the Business Analyst position as the start of a
rewarding, challenging, and highly flexible career with McKinsey. During your first few years
with the firm, you will serve as a BA on multiple client engagements and work with a number
of colleagues and clients in a range of industry and functional areas. We encourage you to
explore different content areas or geographies through a year-long rotation with one of our
practices (e.g., corporate finance, social sector, healthcare, operations) or global offices; many
do this after two years as a generalist BA. For all BA's, you will likely intersect with many
elements of our firm's work including Digital, Implementation, Analytics - either by
collaborating on teams or working with colleagues from these groups. Following your BA
tenure, assuming good performance, you will move into a postgraduate school role. Some BAs
will take advantage of the opportunity to get outside experience through a secondment
(externship) with a private sector or social sector client with the firm’s support. Others may
choose to pursue graduate school with support from the firm.

Shortlisting Process:
● Resume Shortlisting
● Buddy Process (not eliminative)
● McKinsey "Solve" Test - McKinsey's gamified assessment (not eliminative)-The
assessment was a simple logic and aptitude test in a gamified version. It had 3 games
with a time limit on the duration to finish it. It tested problem solving skills, quick
thinking etc.
● Interview
● Networking sessions were conducted as well.

CGPA Cutoff : -

Test : Aforementioned assessment

GD: -

No of interview rounds - 2

Interview:

● Types of questions asked: case solving and HR questions.

● For the case study questions, the interviewer was gauging logic, problem solving skills (
basically narrowing down the problem and figuring out the root cause) and how
comfortable the candidate was while solving and conversing with the interviewer. The
idea is to check, when put forward in front of the client in a similar situation, how the
candidate would perform. Apart from this, creativity and basic knowledge of industries
are checked while giving out solutions to the case study problems.
● For the HR questions, most of it was based on resumes. Other questions were asked to
know more about the candidate as a person and his/her approach to the different
obstacles and situations. Having a good HR prep is always a positive for McKinsey
interviews. Generally the interview starts off with this to make you comfortable and if
your prep is good you can actually lead the rest of your interview.
Sample questions:
● Round 1 - You are CEO of a company that makes digital storage solutions like dropbox
and works in a B2B segment. It is seeing a decline in its profitability.
● HR questions - Basic introduction and questions about work in previous interns and
social work.
● Round 2 - Netflix has seen a 5x revenue increase post COVID. Suggest strategies to
ensure 3x growth every year for 3 years.
● HR questions - A very short introduction self, situational based questions, Why
McKinsey, questions about leadership positions.
Suggestions:
● Demonstrated interest & achievements across domains are helpful in securing the role.
● PORs, work experience, academic and co-curricular performance, extra-curricular
activities are all shortlisting criteria. Peaks in academics, interns, PORs, curriculars,
extracurriculars or any other relevant field are looked for. The shortlist had people with
an overall well rounded profile and generally not someone who had only one good
thing on their resume.
● Having a good understanding of business structures and strategies helps have better
conversations with interviewers.

Preparation Material:

● Victor Cheng videos + Crafting cases. Case books - Day 1.0, CIC, IIMs, SRCC,placement
preparation drive, etc
● Talking to seniors employed in these companies can help.

Test :
Two tests:
1. Mental Maths Test: 60 questions in 10 minutes. Each question has two values, X and Y, and
three options X<Y, X>Y, and X=Y. Need to solve for numerical values of X and Y as fast as
possible, and mark the correct option. About 25 questions should be sufficient to clear this
round. Only 32 qualified this round for the GD.

2. Coding Test: 1-hour coding test. Given some stock data and an algorithm, have to implement
the algorithm on the data to give the result. An efficient implementation is not a concern, only
need to ensure you can implement it. Comparatively easier to other DSA tests. Python is
strongly recommended.

GD:
The GD was a Market Making Game (Google it). The game had all of us having a card, with
some value, and some on a table, along with some other rules. We made markets while buying
and selling based on the sum of all the cards.
No of interview rounds - 2
Interview:
2 rounds. First was HR and involved questions about you, your interest in the role, and things
like that. The second was Technical and had questions based mainly on probability and
expectations.
HR round: Gauging your interest. You can't fake it. Better to prep properly.

necessary

There are four rounds, with each round eliminating people.
1. Mental Math MCQ test
2. Market Making Group Discussion
3. Simple Coding Test
4. HR and Technical Interviews
Performing well in these is the key. Rest doesn't really matter. Some finance knowledge or
coding-related projects might help in the interview. High CG also doesn't hurt.

LeetCode - for extensive DSA practice
All the Mock Placement Test platforms offered by CDC.
Puzzles and Probability - Heard on the street, 50 problems in Probability, Brainstellar, etc.

Shortlisting Process: Resume Shortlisting,Interview, Aptitude Test ,Technical Test

CGPA Cutoff :Was considered during SL
Test : Aptitude Test ,Technical Test
1 Common test for both profiles
5 Sections
Quant (Probab etc)
Aptitude (NTSE MAT)
English (Listening, Speaking and Writing)
2 Coding (medium difficulty) (for S&Q mainly)
Finance (for S&T mainly)

No of interview rounds - 3

Interview:
3 rounds- 2 technical rounds (Basic / simple live coding question with emphasis on edge cases,
some linal, probab questions, some resume based questions as well. One question was asked
on solving a difficult problem, to see your approach (in my case it was - how would you go
about solving the traffic problem in Indian Cities.) 3rd Round was HR, generic HR questions,
how would you handle various situations.

Round 1 & 2
● Basic / simple live coding question with emphasis on edge cases, some linal, probab
questions, some resume based questions as well. One question was asked on solving a
difficult problem, to see your approach eg:- how would you go about solving the traffic
problem in Indian Cities.
● Round 1 -> Was asked to implement K-means clustering in code. Also questioned on
hinge loss and why it's the preferred loss func for logistic regression. Some questions
on bias-variance tradeoff and regularization techniques to prevent overfitting. Then
moved to Decision trees and Random forests. Questions were asked on topics like
bagging, pruning and loss functions for different applications. Then moved to boosting
-> what is boosting and why it works. Also questioned on how the next learner is
trained based on previous learners (look it up).

● Round 2 -> Complete coverage of DL. Started with ANNs and how they can universally
approximate functions. Why is introducing a non-linearity important (XOR problem)?
Then moved to CNNs, why CNNs and how they decrease time complexity? Was
questioned extensively on Object/Image classification, detection, localization, tagging
(mainly loss functions and model structure for these apps). Was finally questioned on
RNNs and how they work? Again, was questioned on how they reduce time
complexity? Asked to explain difference between LSTM and GRU. Also asked to explain
the vanishing/exploding gradient problem. Then, they asked some questions on
Collaborative filtering (based on SVD) as my DDP was based on that. Not
generalizable, but better to read up imo.

Round 3:
● 3rd Round was HR, generic HR questions, how would you handle various situations.
● Round 3 -> Some probability puzzles. Don't remember exact questions, but solve upto
medium questions on Brainstellar and you should be fine. For HR questions, and I
cannot emphasize enough, DRAW on your experience and how you handled a similar
situation effectively.

Suggestions:
● CGPA (>8), Minimum 2 interns (or a total experience of >= 4months)
● PORs are not required but good to have (Coordinator level is enough),
● Projects on Data Science, ML and DL are heavily considered.
● Take notes of core values for HR round

questions were standard tricky problems commonly floating around on the internet.
Hackerrank was the platform used.
GD: No

No of interview rounds - 3

Interview:Everyone goes through 3 panels of interview, each for 30 minutes one after the other.
So the entire interview process would be 1.5 hours at a stretch.

and solving a few expectation relations).
Round 2:
● Second round was highly behavioral, discussing past projects, intentions to join,
expectations from role, etc

Round 3:

questions. None of these rounds are eliminative, all 20 shortlisted students from the test
and resume got to give all 3 interviews one after the other at the end of which the decision
was conveyed. No HR round, even behavioral round was taken by senior quantitative
