Magazine Production Process

Pre-Production Content
In the pre-production content stage the editorial team shares ideas about the content
of the magazine and how they are going to design the layout of the magazine. In this
section of the production process the writers of the magazine will be informed on
what articles have been assigned to them and will do research for their role within
the magazine. The photographers will also know what article they will be assigned
to. In this whale stage it is all about planning and decision making.

Pre-Production Flat Planning

The flat planning stage of the production process is where the editorial team creates
a flat plan. A flat plan is where the layout (such as the content of the magazine and
the order of the magazine) are planned page by page on a flat layout. This helps the
construction and organisation of the upcoming issue and this gives a quick and easy
overview. This also allows the editorial team to be able to reorganise content around.
It also enables the identification of how long the articles need to be, It also easily
enables us to see how many photographs we need and how much space they need
to take and know how long articles need to be.Without this stage the next stage will
also be not organised well or planned.
Production and Post production: Writing and Sub Editing
In this stage of the production process the sub editor checks the written magazine
articles initially for spelling and grammar errors. The sub editor will also check the
length of the articles, if the article is too short the sub editor will ask the writer to write
more information about the article. If the article is too long the sub editor will ask the
writer to cut it down or the sub editor will cut it down themselves. At this stage in the
production process the photoshoot will be done and the images will be selected.
The layout staff will use desktop publishing software like quark to layout and format
each article including the written content and the images. The layout staff might use
pre-made templates that are in line with the magazine's house style.

Post-Production: Checking printers Proof

In this stage of the production process the magazine is then sent to the printer and a
single copy of the magazine will be printed and assembled. This is called a

prototype. The editors of the magazine then the prototype for final approval.

Post-Production: Completion and Distribution

In the final stage of the process the editors will have approved the prototype and
then they will print all the copies of that issue and then all of these copies will be sent
to the distribution company.
Magazine Production Roles
This is the jobs role panel from Empire
magazine identifying the jobs and who does
them

Sub Editor
The sub editor of a magazine's job is to check all the work and make changes to the
text in the articles as well as the images within the magazine. They do this to make
sure that the magazine will be ready to be published. The sub editor is like the
immune system of the operation

Editor
An editor's job in the magazine is to plan out the magazine; they do this by sharing
ideas with others and designing the layout of the magazine. Once an editor has done
this then the writers are ready to start work on the articles. An editor is like the brain
of the operation.
