- India experiences earthquakes due to collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, especially in areas along the Himalayan mountain range. The country is divided into 4 seismic zones based on expected earthquake intensities.
- Zone 5 in north and northeast India is the most quake-prone as it lies along the collision boundary. Zone 4, which includes parts of north India, experiences strong quakes due to proximity to Zone 5.
- The remaining parts of central and peninsular India fall in Zones 2 and 3, indicating lower quake intensities. Over 40% of India has a low risk of earthquakes. However, quakes can still occur depending on local geological conditions.
