D. 𝟏𝟖 – 𝟒𝒃

5. WORD PROBLEM: Mario and Luigi have the same birthday, but they were born in different years. This
year Luigi is 𝟐𝟎 years old and Mario is 𝟐𝟑, so Mario is 𝟑 years older than Luigi. When Luigi was 𝟏𝟐, Mario
was 𝟏𝟓. When Luigi is 𝟑𝟓, Mario will be 𝟑𝟖. No matter what Luigi age is, Mario’s age will always be 𝟑 years
more, right?
In the language of algebra, we say that Luigi’s age and Mario’s age are variable and the number three (𝟑)
is a constant. The ages change, or vary, so age is a variable. The 3 years between them always stays the
same, so the age difference is the constant.
In algebra, letters of the alphabet are used to represent variables. Suppose we call Luigis’s age as a 𝒈.
Then, we could use 𝒈 + 𝟑 to represent Mario’s age. FILL the table below.
USUAL LANGUAGE ALGEBRAIC LANGUAGE
The DOUBLE of Luigi’s age
Luigi’s age MINUS 𝟒
The TRIPLE of Luigi’s age PLUS 𝟑
𝒏 TIMES Luigi’s age.
