Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Harvey L. Lindsay, Jr.

Visionary real estate developer and Hampton Roads business leader passes at age 93

Norfolk, Va. (April 20, 2023) – The Hampton Roads region lost one of its most ardent
champions with the passing of Harvey L. Lindsay Jr., Chairman and former President of Harvey
Lindsay Commercial Real Estate (HLCRE), on April 19, 2023. A man of faith, family and
philanthropy, Mr. Lindsay had a profound and positive impact on every aspect of the Hampton
Roads commercial landscape and on hundreds of lives through the many initiatives he supported
in the community.

During his almost 70-year career with the company founded by his father, Harvey Lindsay Sr.,
Mr. Lindsay was instrumental in developing and transforming the Hampton Roads and Peninsula
regions with iconic projects including Dominion Tower, the original Waterside Festival
Marketplace, Military Circle Mall in Norfolk, City Center at Oyster Point in Newport News, and
the Village Shops at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, among many others.

Active in community and civic affairs, he maintained a lifelong devotion to his native Hampton
Roads region by generously sharing his time, talent and resources with a number of
organizations. Over the years, he served as president of the Norfolk Community Concert
Association, director of the U.S. Naval Base Little League, director of the Norfolk Chamber of
Commerce, board member of the Access College Foundation and as a fundraiser for Southside
Boys & Girls Club, The United Way, and the Union Mission ministry’s new $30 million campus.
A longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk, he taught Sunday school,
chaired Christian Education, and served as junior warden.

His contributions to the commercial real estate industry included mentoring his HLCRE
associates and nurturing the next generation of professionals through his involvement with the
Harvey Lindsay School of Commercial Real Estate at Old Dominion University.

“Harvey was an eternal optimist and a true servant leader who believed in empowering
individuals to take care of their neighbors,” said Robert M. King, one of Mr. Lindsay’s sons and
current President of Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate. “Throughout his career, my dad
believed that what was good for people was good for business. His solid unyielding values are
embedded in the culture of our company. All of us at Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate
are committed to honoring his legacy of leadership and community service in the Hampton
Roads region.”

“My grandfather’s passing is a tremendous loss to our family, the region and the commercial real
estate industry,” added Bobby Beasley, III, Vice President at HLCRE. “He always treated people
with kindness and understanding, often working behind the scenes to make a significant
difference in the lives of those most vulnerable.”

Mr. Lindsay’s inherent talents as an entrepreneur and visionary were evident soon after he joined
the family business in 1954. Early on, he was heavily involved in creating growth areas on Little
Creek Road and Military Highway and, at age 29, he was named Realtor of the Year by the
Norfolk Real Estate Board.

In 1969, Lindsay was promoted to President and continued to expand the company’s footprint
throughout the Hampton Roads region including developments in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach,
and the Peninsula. He was passionate about investing in projects to revitalize downtown Norfolk
and create a thriving commercial hub along the waterfront.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps on the front lines
during the Korean War as a lieutenant. He often spoke about the impact his service had on his
life and detailed a chance foxhole conversation with an African American soldier which led
Lindsay to advocate for civil rights back home in Virginia.

He fought to reopen schools that were closed by Massive Resistance, which became his entry
into civic affairs. Actively involved in the Citizens Advisory Committee, which he served as
chairman, he also helped form and served as chair of a temporary committee called the Urban
Coalition, now the Urban League of Hampton Roads, serving as the organization’s president.

“At a time when taking a bold stance on race relations in Southern Virginia was risky, Mr.
Lindsay stood for what was right, demonstrating uncommon courage,” said Gilbert Bland,
President and CEO of the Urban League of Hampton Roads. “He continued to be an ally
throughout his whole life in support of the Urban League and our mission as well as support of
other like-minded organizations. And, he was a personal friend. Hampton Roads is a stronger,
more inclusive community because of his efforts.”

The recipient of numerous honors and recognitions, he was awarded the prestigious Darden
Award in 2018 from the CIVIC Leadership Institute in Norfolk. Other accolades included the
First Citizen of Hampton Roads designation from LEAD Hampton Roads in 2014, the First
Citizen Award from the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk in 1991 and the Distinguished Service
Award in 1964 from the Norfolk Jaycees.
