Subject: Summary of Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Test Results for

10GBASE-T with SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED™ X10D UTP Cabling

1. Introduction

As part of the SYSTIMAX 20 Year Extended Application Assurance Program, compliance to

the relevant EMC regulations has been included since the European Electromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) Directive 89/336/EEC was introduced in 1996. The Application
Assurance was initially offered for all LAN applications up to IEEE 802.3ab 1000BASE-T,
and was extended to include 10GBASE-T operating over GigaSPEED X10D (CAT6A) when
the 802.3an standard was completed in 2006.

Several industry-leading equipment vendors have recently announced 10GBASE-T server

adapters and switches based on the latest 10GBASE-T transceiver technology. These
systems comply with the relevant IEC CISPR EMC requirements, and also state that they
will operate over Cat6A UTP cabling to 100 meters.

To further validate the EMC performance claim over Cat6A UTP cabling, CommScope
successfully completed comprehensive EMC testing of a 10GBASE-T system operating over
GigaSPEED X10D UTP cabling at an independent laboratory.

2. EMC Tests and Results

The EMC testing was performed at a National Technical Systems (NTS) Laboratory in
March 2010. NTS is a fully accredited independent EMC laboratory which had the following
accreditations at the time of testing:

• ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and

Calibration Laboratories)
• ISO 9000: 1997 (E)
• A2LA, VCCI, BSMI
• Semi-anechoic chamber accepted by FCC
• Compliance with radiated and AC line conducted test site criteria in ANSI C.63.4-
2005 as required by the FCC

The following EMC tests were carried out:

a) Radiated Emission according to IEC CISPR 22 or EN 55022

b) Radiated Field Immunity according to IEC CISPR 24 or EN 55024 and IEC 61000-4-3
c) Electrical Fast Transients/Burst Immunity according to IEC CISPR 24 or EN 55024 and
IEC 61000-4-4
d) Conducted Immunity according to IEC CISPR 24 or EN 55024 and IEC 61000-4-6
e) Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) according to IEC CISPR 24 or EN 55024 and IEC
61000-4-2

Table 1 provides a list of the equipment used in the testing. The test configuration is
according to ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG3 3N447B - Evaluation of proposed generic cabling
set-up to be included in EMC testing of information technology equipment based on radiated
emission tests, by Erik Bech, 14th March 1997. See Figure 1.
