The decline of the Ahom Kingdom started with the rule of Gaurinath Singha

(1780-95). When he was attacked and Rangpur was taken over Gaurinath Singha
along with his entire family sailed off to Nagaon, then further to Gauhati. Gaurinath Singha
sought help from the East India Company through Raush, a salt
merchant and Mr. Dauglas, Commissioner of Koch Bihar for both materials and
troops. The Governor General, Lord Cornwallis, responded by sending Captain
Thomas Welsh with a troop of trained and armed sepoys.

The causes for the downfall of Ahom Kingdom are as follows:

1. Internal affairs or defects in their administration system

Initially, feudatory lords submitted to the suzerenity of the Ahoms but later on they
started going against the Ahoms. It can be accelerated to the defects of their
administration.

2. Inefficient military system

Another cause for the downfall of Ahims was the inefficient military system. With the
coming of the weak rulers , the Ahom Kingdom started lacking standing army.
Paik system exempted the higher class from military services and only the
commoners were engaged.
Thus, the commoners started to despise it which led to the downfall of Ahom
Kingdom.

3. Living in isolation

It is said that the Ahoms live in isolation. They do not have any idea about the military
and weapons of the English or Burmese. Their weapons were no match to the
weapons of English/Burmese.

4. Lack of patriotic and brave commander

In the later period of Ahom, there were no more patriotic or brave commander
because the Commander became corrupted .

5. Religious cause

When the Ahoms first came to Assam they followed traditional religion and
worshipped ancestral spirits. Initially they did not mix religion with political affairs. The
Ahoms never forced to join or follow their religion . But gradually, when they
converted to Hinduism they gave up their traditional religion. They went to the extent
of even giving up the state for religion. Even Sib Sangha took retirement voluntarily
from the state. The kings also came under the influence of Brahmins which ultimately
led to the downfall of Ahom Kingdom.

6. Later Ahom Kings

The downfall the Ahoms can be attributed to the later Kings. Till Rajeshwar Singha,
the administration was good. The Ahoms enjoyed peace and prosperity. Starting from
Lakshmi Singha who succeeded Rajeshwar Singha the monarchs started to neglect
their duties and entrusted to ministers where ministers rose into power. The later
rulers were incompetent that they became puppet rulers in the hands of ministers.
This led to internal and external aggression.

7. Moamaria rebellion 1769-1805

It was during Lakshmi Singha, the revolt of Moamaria started. It was the conflict
between Ahoms and the Morans. It greatly weakened the kingdom of the Ahims. The
main cause of the revolt of Moamaria was due to paik system and religious policies
of Ahoms. The soldiers tried to free themselves from the paik system. Many
tributaries chiefs started to declare themselves as independent which was
responsible for the downfall of the Ahom Kingdom.
