Heat wave News Live Updates: Schools in Maharashtra, Odisha to remain closed from today in view
of scorching heat
All schools affiliated to the state board in Maharashtra will remain closed from Friday in view of the
heat wave conditions. Schools of other boards can take decision about closure after considering their
curriculum and activities, said the order issued by the School Education Department on Thursday.
Except for Vidarbha, schools in the state will reopen on June 15. Those in Vidarbha will restart from
June 30, the order said.
Meanwhile, Odisha has announced early summer vacation. All schools -- government, private and
aided -- will be closed for summer vacation from April 21. Usually, summer vacations begin in Odisha
schools in the first week of May. The state has been reeling under scorching heat over the past few
days with the mercury crossing 43 degrees Celsius in 11 places on Wednesday. Baripada in
Mayurbhanj was the hottest at 44.5 degrees Celsius.

A goods train derailed in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district on Friday, affecting rail traffic, Southern
Railway officials said.The accident happened at Rayakottai in Bengaluru division, prompting the
Southern Railway to immediately cancel four trains. Some trains are being diverted via Jolarpettai-
Tiruppatur instead of Dharmapuri-Hosur route, an official said.

Ahead of the Shimla Municipal Corporation polls, Himachal Pradesh BJP chief Suresh Kashyap has
handed over his resignation to the party's national president BJP Nadda, sources said on Friday.
According to BJP office bearers, Kashyap cited "personal reasons" for resigning from his post.
Kashyap, who was appointed as the chief of the BJP's Himachal Pradesh unit on July 22, 2020,
following the resignation of Rajeev Bindal, had a lacklustre tenure. The party suffered defeat in the
bypolls to the Mandi Lok Sabha seat and in Arki, Fatehpur and Jubbal-Kotkhai Assembly
constituencies in November 2021. It also lost the Assembly polls held in December 2022.

Uttar Pradesh has registered five new Covid deaths, increasing concerns of the government. The
fatalities were reported from Ghaziabad, Jaunpur, Sultanpur, Ghazipur, and Chandauli. It is for the
first time this year that these many Covid patients died in a day in the state. The last time the state
recorded five or more deaths in a day was 10 months ago. Meanwhile, the state also recorded 840
new Covid cases.

Twitter begins removing blue checks from users who don't pay
After several false starts, Twitter began making good on its promise on Thursday to remove the blue
checks from accounts that don't pay a monthly fee to keep them. Twitter had about 300,000 verified
users under the original blue-check system - many of them journalists, athletes and public figures.
The checks - which used to mean the account was verified by Twitter to be who it says it is - began
disappearing from these users' profiles late morning Pacific Time.High-profile users who lost their
blue checks on Thursday included Beyoncé, Pope Francis, Oprah Winfrey and former President
Donald Trump.The costs of keeping the marks range from USD 8 a month for individual web users to
a starting price of USD 1,000 monthly to verify an organisation, plus USD 50 monthly for each
affiliate or employee account.

Tornadoes plowed through Oklahoma during another deadly spring storm in the US, killing at least
three people and damaging dozens of homes in a hard-hit rural town. Forecasters warned on
Thursday that more severe weather was still possible. A day after at least eight tornadoes spun

Delhi on Thursday logged 1,603 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 26.75 per cent along with
three fatalities, according to data shared by the health department here. With the new fatalities, the
death toll from the pandemic rose to 26,581 in the national capital. Out of 7,976 Covid beds, 390 are
occupied, the data showed.On Wednesday, the city reported six deaths along with 1,757 new cases
with a positivity rate of 28.63 per cent.The national capital had recorded 1,537 COVID-19 cases on
Tuesday with a positivity rate of 26.54 per cent.

Covid Live: Mumbai reports 234 new COVID-19 cases, one death
Mumbai on Wednesday reported 234 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the city's overall tally to
11,61,136, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. One patient - a 73-year-old male
with chronic kidney disease - succumbed to the infection during the day, which raised the death toll
to 19,755, it said. This is for the second day in a row that the metropolis reported more than 200
new cases for the second day in a row after witnessing a dip for two days. On Tuesday, the city had
reported 220 cases.
