FIRE DAMPER INSTALLATION, OPERATION
& MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

ACTUATOR CONNECTIONS (if applicable):

Electrical or pneumatic connections to damper actuators should be made in accordance with wiring and piping diagrams developed in
compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations. Be sure to check actuator for proper voltage and current draw.
Tampering with the actuator’s installation or connecting the actuator to an improper voltage and current may void the warranty.

DAMPER OPERATION, TESTING & MAINTENANCE

The procedures discussed here are intended to insure that nothing interferes with a damper’s proper operation and to
identify and eliminate a number of potential situations that could occur and interfere with said operation.

Fire Damper Operation:

All NCA fire dampers are operated at the factory, however pre-installation testing of its operation can be completed by bending the
straps that hold the fusible link and temporarily removing the fusible link. Place the damper in its intended installation orientation
(vertical or horizontal) and allow the curtain-style blade to close.

WARNING: During any operating, inspection or testing of fusible link and spring operated dampers, NCA recommends the following:

1. Caution is advised when a fusible link is suddenly released. Gravity or spring operated dampers may slam closed causing an abrupt
interruption of airflow. As this could cause damage to ductwork, consideration should be given to conducting these tests without
system airflow.
2. When removing the fusible link to check damper operation, be sure to keep fingers, hands and any other body parts out of the blade
travel path to prevent injury.
3. Check closure springs. If defective, contact damper manufacturer for replacement procedures.

Fire Damper Testing:

All fire dampers and their fusible links or actuators shall be visually inspected and cycled at specific time intervals in accordance
with the local building codes or the latest editions of NFPA 90A, 92A, local codes and UL 864. Also refer to the actuator manufacturer’s
recommendations if applicable.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If the fire damper has actautors and a thermostat installed on the damper, do not apply a heat gun, flame or any
heat producing device directly to the thermostat. Simply disconnecting the power to the actuator(s) shall be sufficient for testing
procedures.

Fire Damper Maintenance:

Fire Life-Safety related dampers that are properly applied, equipped with the appropriate UL labels, appropriately installed, and demon-
strated to function as intended through a building commisioning process should require no specific preventive maintenance. However,
NCA recommends that obstructions, dirt build up, and any rust or corrosion be removed using mild solvents or detergents. No lubrica-
tion is required, however if it is desired, damper tracks and blade hinges may be lubricated using a dry lubricant.

Never use a petroleum based lubricant as it will attract dust and eventually impede a damper’s operation.

Message from NCA:

This installation, operation and maintenance instruction document has been reviewed and approved by the Underwriter’s Laboratories.

As a part of NCA’s continuous improvement program, NCA reserves the right to make further improvements or changes without notice.

Pre-Installation Notes and Guidelines:

These notes and guidelines are formulated in order to aid in completing the damper installation in a
timely and efficient manner.
A. Check the schedules for proper damper locations within the building.
B. Inspect damper for damage before installing.
C. Dampers must be installed free from twisting or racking.
D. DO NOT compress or stretch the damper into the opening.
E. DO NOT lift the damper by the blades or actuator (handle damper using frame or sleeve).
F. DO NOT install screws or fasteners in the damper that could potentially interfere with the unexposed blade linkage and prevent
proper damper operation.
G. The damper and actuator must be protected from dirt, dust and foreign materials before and after installation.
H. When painting, wall-texturing, insulating or any other foreign material is being sprayed within 5 feet of the damper, the damper
must be sufficiently covered and protected.

General Installation Instructions Figure 1
The following are general installation guidelines for NCA’s
control dampers. It is important to note that control damper
materials, sizes and applications vary widely. Consult proper
literature on each model for specific construction details.

1. Single section control dampers as well as multiple section

Do not twist, rack or

free from racking or twisting (see Figure 1). In order to plumb and square in
ensure the damper is not racked, measurements AF should opening.
equal BE and measurements AB should equal CD in Figure
2 within a tolerance of 1/8” (1.5 mm).
2. Determine proper location of the extended shaft coupling
or jackshaft before installing the damper (see Figure 3).
Shaft must be attached to a power blade. On parallel blade
units, all blades are power blades and on opposed blade
units, every other blade is a power blade.
3. Multiple damper assemblies are not restricted to a maxi- Figure 2
mum number of sections, but single section units are
restricted to the maximum and minimum sizes in Table 1 on A B
page 2 of this IOM.
4. Refer to the “Multiple Section Installation Guidelines” within
this document for further guidance on multiple section
dampers.
5. Use shims as needed between damper frame and duct
opening or opening space to prevent the distortion of the C D
frame by fasteners holding it place. Support braces should
be used at every horizontal mullion (multiple section AF = BE
dampers) and vertically at every 8 feet (2.4 m) for strength. AB = CD
Note: Dampers being installed in high velocity applications may require more
bracing. Attachment, framing and anchoring of damper assemblies into E F
openings, ductwork or walls/floors is the responsibility of the installer. These
variables should be determined by field engineers for each specific installation.

jackshafted, the jackshaft will also extend approximately
6” (152 mm) beyond the frame.
7. Damper blades, axles and linkages must operate
proficiently without binding. Before system operation, all
dampers should be cycled after installation to assure prop-
er operation. When testing multiple section dampers, all
individual sections should open and close simultaneously.

Note: Damper blades must always be running horizontally when installing the Extended
control damper in a vertical orientation. Consult the factory if a vertical damper Shaft
with vertical blades is needed. Shaft Support

Multiple Section Control Dampers
Multiple Section Installation Guidelines
Dampers larger than the maximum single section size (see
Table 1 on page 2) are manufactured in multiple section assem-
blies. These multiple section assemblies are connected with a
jackshaft that runs parallel to the width of the damper.
1. Refer to the “General Installation Instructions” section Figure 4
on how to install NCA control dampers into a duct or
an opening.
2. When individual damper sections need to be assembled
together to make a multiple section unit, use the following
fasteners:
A. #10 x 3/4” (19mm) max sheet metal screws
B. 1/4” (6mm) diameter nuts and bolts 4B 3B 2B 1B
C. 1/4” tack or spot welds
D. 3/16” (4mm) diameter steel pop rivets
The above fasteners should be placed a maximum of
6” (152mm) on centers and a maximum of 2” (51mm) from
corners. The approved fasteners should be on both faces
of the damper sections. 4A 3A 2A 1A
3. Support braces should be used at every horizontal mullion
(multiple section dampers) and vertically at every 8 feet
(2.4 m) for strength.
4. Refer to Figure 4 on the orientation of the individual
damper sections.

Actuator Connections
Electrical or pneumatic connections to damper actuators should be made in accordance with wiring and piping diagrams developed in
compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations. Be sure to check actuator for proper voltage and current draw.
Tampering with the actuator’s installation or connecting the actuator to an improper voltage and current may void the warranty.

BASIC CONTROL DAMPER INSTALLATION,
OPERATION & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Damper Operation, Testing & Maintenance

The procedures discussed here are intended to ensure that nothing interferes with a damper’s proper operation and to identify and
eliminate a number of potential situations that could occur and interfere with said operation.

Control Damper Operation:

All NCA control dampers are operated at the factory, however pre-installation testing of its operation should be conducted. Wire the
actuator per correct wiring diagrams. to ensure proper actuator and damper operation.

WARNING: During any operating, inspection or testing of control dampers, NCA recommends the following:

1. Caution is advised when removing power from the damper’s actuator. Actuators may have very strong internal springs that may
slam closed causing an abrupt interruption of airflow. As this could cause damage to ductwork, consideration should be given to
condusting these tests without system airflow.
2. When checking damper operation, be sure to keep fingers, hands and any other body parts out of the blade travel path to prevent
injury.
3. Check proper actuator operation. If defective, contact damper manufacturer for replacement procedures.

Control Damper Testing:

Testing of the damper and actuators prior to installation is imperative to ensure proper wiring and function of the damper. There are
not periodic testing requirements for control dampers, however, consult the actuator’s manufacturer recommendations regarding
periodic testing and maintenance.

Control Damper Maintenance:

Control dampers that are properly applied, appropriately installed, and demonstrated to function as intended through a building commi-
sioning process should require no specific preventive maintenance. However, NCA recommends that obstructions, dirt build up, and
any rust or corrosion be removed using mild solvents or detergents. No lubrication is required, however if it is desired, damper tracks
and blade hinges may be lubricated using a dry lubricant. Never use a petroleum based lubricant as it will attract dust and eventually
impede a damper’s operation.

Message from NCA:

This installation, operation and maintenance instruction document is intended to provide general instructions for multiple different NCA
models of control dampers. Each specific application of control dampers may vary and may require other considerations when it comes
to the installation, operation and maintenance of the damper.
As a part of NCA’s continuous improvement program, NCA reserves the right to make further improvements or changes without notice.

SUGGESTED DETAILS FOR INSTALLATION AND
MAINTENANCE OF NCA LOUVERS

© 2003 NCA Manufacturing

When local codes exist they should take precedence over these instructions and maintenance
details. Proper documentation of installation and maintenance should be kept to insure validation
of warranty and proper operation of a quality product.

Receipt of Shipment: When the louvers arrive, the crate and contents should be inspected for
any visible damage and noted on the freight bill. If damage found, cannot be easily repaired on
site, then the shipment may be refused for delivery and sent back to the factory as a freight claim
for repair. If repair can be done on site, the rep agency or NCA must be contacted immediately to
avoid warranty issues. Care and caution should be taken when unloading louvers from crate. Refer
to Handling below for proper handling of individual louver. Once louvers are uncrated, check for
proper size, finish, frame and blade styles, screens, voltage of actuator (if applicable), and any
visual damage. Any discrepancies should immediately be made to rep agency or NCA.

Storage: All louvers, especially adjustable with actuators, shall be stored in a dry area until
time for installation. Storage of Louvers in un-protected area, such as outdoors, may cause damage
to louver such as finish, adjustable blades, actuators, etc thus voiding any warranty from NCA.
Care should be taken to insure louvers are not damaged while in storage.

Transportation/Handling: When removing louvers from crate and transporting them to the area
for installation, extreme care needs to be taken. Be careful to lift louvers by frames and not blade.
While transporting louver, do not drop, drag, step on, twist, rack, or bow louver. Special Care should
be given to assembled multi-section louvers to support the middle section during transportation
and installation. Measure and inspect opening to insure it is 1/4” larger than outside dimension of
louver. Do not compress or stretch louver into opening.

Note: NCA does not recommend fastening through the flange. Apply caulking/sealant to back
of flange before installation or to outside perimeter of flange between flange and wall.

Shown above are general mounting arrangements for wall louvers. Because local building codes
and installation standards may vary from our recommended minimums, we recommend that they
be used over NCA’s when and where required. All structural supports, mounting clips/angles,
mounting fasteners, sealant/caulk, shims, and anchors are furnished by others. NCA does not provide
these as a standard item on louvers. For installation into walls the same thickness as the louver
(Flush Mount), NCA recommends the use of 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 1/8” mounting plates or flat bar on 24”
centers spaced such that there is a minimum of 2 fasteners per side. The recommended mounting
in walls thicker than the louver is the use of 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” x 1/8” angle continuous or clips on a
minimum of 24” centers, spaced such that there is a minimum of 2 fasteners per side. NCA
recommends a minimum of #12 screws when used in wood or steel and 1/4” when used in masonry.
The opening shall be square and the sides shall be straight (not bowed). The views shown above
should cover most mounting situations encountered. Large multi-panel louvers may require additional
structural support on interior of opening which is not provided by NCA.

Maintenance: All louvers should be checked and serviced on a regular basis. In general, stationary
louvers require very little maintenance. All louvers should be cleaned with a mild soap solution and
rinsed with fresh water on a regular basis, depending on system usage and atmospheric conditions
to maintain a good appearance. If any other chemicals are used to clean the surface, be sure to
read the instruction carefully to insure no damage is done to the finish. Screens should be checked
for build up of debris. Debris between screen and blades could cause water penetration (due to
reduced free area), unsightly stains to appear on the face of the louver, or unwanted nesting of
animals. The caulk around the louver should be checked for cracking, distortion, shrinkage, etc.
Repair or replace any damaged or worn caulking to prevent water intake. Operable and adjustable
louvers do require more periodic inspections and maintenance due to moving parts. All connections,
fasteners, linkages, pivot points, seals, bearings, swivels, and actuators should be checked for
tightness, proper alignment, corrosion, and wear. Replace any worn or corroded parts. Pivot points
such as bearings and swivels should be lubricated with a light Moly-Lubricant and excess wiped
away to prevent any build up or staining. Check actuator mounting braces to insure they have not
broken or loosened, which may cause leakage, vibration or lack of ventilation.

Specifications are correct at time of printing. However, as part of our ‘continuous improvement program,’ we reserve the right to make further improvements without notice.
