EFFICACY OF CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS AND ORIGANUM VULGARE

LEAVES EXTRACT AS ANTI-VIRAL FOGGING SOLUTION

RESEARCH PLAN
EFFICACY OF CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS AND ORIGANUM VULGARE

LEAVES EXTRACT AS ANTI-VIRAL FOGGING SOLUTION 2

RATIONALE

One of the issues we've had ever since is Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

COVID-19 is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-

CoV-2) is primarily spread by droplet or aerosol infection. The ongoing search for a way

to stop the spread of this virus is ongoing as the pandemic progresses. That is why the

researcher will investigate and create an anti-viral fogging solution using the leaves of

Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) and Origanum vulgare (oregano) to prevent

contracting viruses from contaminated objects around us and reduce COVID cases in the

Philippines, due to its chemical properties, and to its capacity to deter viruses. The major

goal of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of extract from the leaves of lemongrass

and oregano that would result in killing viruses and bacteria.

PROBLEMS

The general problem of this study is: How effective are the Cymbopogon citratus

and Origanum vulgare leaves extract as an anti-viral fogging solution?

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

1. How may the chemical properties Cymbopogon citratus and Origanum vulgare

leaves extract as potential anti-viral fogging solution be described in terms of:

1.1. 25% extract concentration, 50% extract concentration, and 75% extract concentration

by mass

1.1.1. Physicochemical Properties

1.1.1.1.Color

1.1.1.2. pH level 3

1.1.1.3.Odor

1.1.1.4.Percentage Yield

2. How may the process of using Cymbopogon citratus and Origanum vulgare

leaves extract as insect repellent be described in terms of :

2.1 Boiling

2.2 Soaking

2.3 Extraction

2.4 Filtration

3. How may the following indicators of effectiveness be measured in terms of :

3.1 Rate of Action and

3.2 Mortality Rate of Viruses Killed

4. Is there any significant difference in the number of viruses killed and

effectiveness between the three (3) concentrations of the Cymbopogon citratus

and Origanum vulgare leaves extract prepared as an anti-viral fogging solution?

5. What are the implications of the study to the Department of Health?

HYPOTHESIS

Ho: There is no significant difference in the number of viruses killed and

effectiveness between the three (3) concentrations of the Cymbopogon citratus and

Origanum vulgare leaves extract as an anti-viral fogging solution.

SCIENTIFIC THOUGHTS

4
The study will aim to achieve the following:

● Determine the effectiveness of the product.

● Develop an anti-viral fogging solution made from the leaves of

Cymbopogon citratus and Origanum vulgare that kills viruses.

● Provide a significant data on how to lessen the COVID-19 cases.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

● The leaves extract will be used as an anti-viral fogging solution to kill

viruses that cause COVID-19.

● The varied leaves extract concentration prepared from the plants will have

an effect on the viruses.

● The anti-viral fogging solution that will produce has no negative effects in

the environment as well as to the users.

PROCEDURES

The first step is to ready the materials to be used. Get the leaves of Cymbopogon

citratus (lemongrass) and Origanum vulgare (oregano) and wash them with distilled

water; air-dry and weigh in a digital weighing scale to obtain 25 and 20 grams for each
sample. The leaves are to be air-dried at room temperature (27° C) for a day after they

were cut into pieces. Next is to boil and soak the plant material; adding 25 grams of

leaves to distilled water for boiling and 20 grams of leaves are to be soaked in a 70%

alcohol for 24 hours. After boiling for 30 minutes and soaking the leaves for 24 hours the

extracts are to be filtered using filter paper. For every extract gathered, the pH level is

being measured.

The water fraction and alcohol fraction of the leaves extract were made as an

antiviral fogging solution. The result for each fraction was tested. The accuracy and 5

validity of the results were tested by using one way-analysis of variance (ANOVA) as

accorded by Regala (2008).

DISPOSAL OF TEST MATERIALS

● USED AND UNUSED LEAVES

Used and unused leaves will be collected and disposed in the dumping pit

inside the school.

● DISPOSABLE SURGICAL GLOVES AND FACE MASKS

Used surgical gloves and face masks will be collected and disposed in the

materials recovery facility (MRF) to be picked up by the garbage collector.

DATA ANALYSIS

The viruses killed will be subjected for experimentation. Data collected will be

analysed through the use of tables. Experimental design and Analysis of Variance
(ANOVA) will be used to determine the significant difference on the number of viruses

killed and effectiveness of the different prepared leaves extract concentrations.
