BICOL REGION

Bicol Region (Region 5) comprises six

provinces, four on the Bicol Peninsula mainland
(the southeastern end of Luzon) – Albay,
Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and
Sorsogon – and the offshore island provinces
of Catanduanes and Masbate. The region's
tourism industry has been revived by the
popularity of Mayon Volcano, the new CamSur
Water Sports Complex, whale shark spotting,
among others, which consequently increased
the number of upscale resorts. Naga City has
its colonial churches, and pilgrimages to Our
Lady of Peñafrancia.

Bicol region is highly volcanic in origin

and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Known as
the Bicol Volcanic Arc or Chain, the volcanoes
are the results of the Philippine Sea Plate
subducting under the Philippine Mobile Belt, along the Philippine Trench. Volcanism is
evident by the number of hot springs, crater lakes, and volcanoes that dot the region
starting from Mount Labo in Camarines Norte to the Gate Mountains in Matnog, Sorsogon.

regional center of the whole Bicol Region, which is located in the southern foothill of
Mayon Volcano. The province was added to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere
Reserves in March 2016. Albay is s hortened form of the phrase al baybay meaning
‘shore’, referring to the coastal settlement of Swangan, now the port district of Legazpi
City.
Camarines Norte and Sur
Camarines is the plural form of the Spanish word camarin, the term used by the
Spanish to refer to the storage sheds (kamalig) that were abundant in the fertile and
densely populated Bicol River plain. The capital of Camarines Norte is Daet and Camarines
Sur is Pili. In 1636, the province of Camarines was created which was divided in 1829,
creating Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur. They were briefly merged from 1854 to
1857 into Ambos Camarines (ambos is Spanish for "both"). They were merged into Ambos
Camarines once again in 1893. The province was divided into Camarines Norte and
Camarines Sur once again in 1917.

Catanduanes: Abaca Capital of the World

Catanduanes is an island province located in the Bicol Region of Luzon in the
Philippines. It is the 12th-largest island in the Philippines. In the early 1900s, Catanduanes
was a sub-province of Ambos Camarines. Later, it was a sub-province of Albay. It became
an autonomous province in 1945. Catanduanes is a hispanicized and pluralized form of
katanduan, Bikol for "place abundant with tando trees," referring to the abundance of
such trees in the island. Its capital is Virac.

Masbate
Masbate is an island province near the midsection of the nation’s archipelago. Its
provincial capital is Masbate City. The province consists of three major islands: Masbate,
Ticao and Burias. Masbate is at the crossroads of two island groups: Visayas and Luzon.
It is politically part of Bicol Region in the latter. However, from a bio-geographic and
socio-ethno-linguistic perspective, Masbate is grouped in the former. Some early accounts
record the name of the province's main island as Masbat. This may be based on masibát,
a native word for "abundant with lances," perhaps in reference to the island's well-armed
inhabitants; or on masabat, Bikol for "to meet along the way," alluding to the strategic
position of the town (now city) that bears the name, as well as the island named after it,
within old Philippine maritime trade routes.

Sorsogon
Sorsogon is a province in the Philippines located in the southernmost province in
Luzon. Its capital is Sorsogon City at the tip of the Bicol Peninsula and faces the island of
Samar to the southeast across the San Bernardino Strait and Ticao Island to the
southwest. Sorsogueños is how the people of Sorsogon call themselves. Sorsogon is a
hispanicized form of sogsogon, Bikol adjective meaning "wadeable," derived from the
root word sogsog, which means "to wade" or "to ford"; a wadeable river, for example, is
known as salog na sogsogon. The toponym originally referred to the settlement on the
banks of the Salog River, which became the capital of the province upon its establishment
in 1767.
