JAPANESE PARASOL
- This is also called the Higasa Odori.
- According to the historians, Higasa Odori used to be a part of
the Ryukyuan court dance technique.
- A man named Tamagusuku Seiji created the “Onna Odori” for
a woman with an Okinawan style of costume. This is a dance
meant to evoke the summer season and the happy carefree
feeling of a maiden playing in the fields.
- Rykyuan – features dance, music, dialogue and is often
compared to western opera. –a classical drama.
- This is a classical dance created in the 18th to 19th century.
- The parasol dance is mainly performed by girls. It requires
skills in maneuvering the handle of the parasol so that it could
be turned easily to any desired direction.
- The main purpose of this dance is to honor and entertain
ambassadors from China.
- This type of dancing lasted until the prefecture of Okinawa
was established, at which point it became part of the "outlaw"
Kabuki theatre.

• Uchikomi Odori – Dramatic Dance
• Nise Odori – Men’s Dance
• Onna Odori – Women’s Dance

Costume
- The Japanese parasol dance is meant for women.
- Their costume is very feminine.
- Includes bright, colorful, and very floral kimonos.
- Colorful and handmade parasols

The Parasol
- Parasol (Parasoru) – a parasol is a light umbrella used to give
shield from the sun.
- Made of bamboo, paper, and oil paint.
