CASE STUDY

Bongani is a first year University student. She is 20 years old and is studying teaching.
Bongani has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). She struggles with loss
of concentration during lectures. She is registered for eight modules in the first semester.
Her majors are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. She works in the evenings as a waiter
at a restaurant. Her shift is from 5pm to 9pm and every Saturday she works as a cashier at
a grocery store for pocket money. Bongani is studying on a NSFAS bursary.
For additional income, Bongani plays piano at social gathering and events. Her scheduled is
therefore unpredictable and often includes working late. Bongani has failed her Physics
semester test and this has come to the attention of the NSFAS office. NSFAS has informed
Bongani that she is at risk of losing her bursary. Due high levels of stress levels and anxiety
caused by her busy schedule, Bongani finds herself feeling increasingly sad, lethargic and
depressed. Her biggest challenge seems to be finding a balance between work and studies.
She has two upcoming semester tests and two assignments all due in one week. Her agent
has also called to inform her that she will have to play the piano at two social gatherings over
the coming weekend. Bongani has been seeing the Counselling Psychologist at the Student
Support Centre in the Lethlotlo Building on a weekly basis. She has decided to take advice
from him to manage her overwhelming schedule and to prioritise things in her life.
Question 1

Use the information in the case study and what you have learned throughout the semester to
draw up a timetable for Bongani. This timetable needs to include her daily activities, her work
responsibilities, upcoming tests and assignments and time for rest and socialising. The
timetable needs to reflect a week in Bongani’s life, starting on a Monday and ending on a
Sunday.

Question 2
You are Bongani’s Mathematics lecturer. You have noticed that she is a hard worker and
always engages in the classroom. She recently visited your office to ask for extension on an
assignment. During your meeting she informed you on her current difficulties, her mood and
her demanding jobs. She expressed her fear of losing her NSFAS bursary. You have
decided to write a letter to the NSFAS office to request that they reconsider revoking her
bursary. Write a letter to the administrator of the NSFAS bursary office. In the letter,
mention the following: (20)
• Explain your role and what your observations are of Bongani as a student
• Apply the concept of time savers to the above scenario and explain to NSFAS how
this will benefit Bongani.
• State the difficulties that a person diagnosed with ADD might have. Explain to NSFAS
how Bongani is including these considerations in her planning.

Question 3
As the Life Orientation teacher, you have been asked by your school newspaper to write an
informative article of for learners in the FET phase in which you advise them on the
following:

• How to plan for study time

• How to deal with stress, anxiety and depression
