Time Process Components
(min)

3 min *Anticipatory Set

TTW welcome the students back to class and have carpet friends join the carpet and
table friends stay in their seats.

TTW starts a class discussion by asking this question “What does it mean to be
kind?”

TSW respond (possible answers: by holding the door for a friend, helping a friend
when they are hurt, etc.)

TTW ask if they can share a time when they performed an act of kindness for
someone.

TSW respond (I helped my mom carry groceries, I gave my friend a hug after they
were hurt, etc.)

TTW encourage students to continue to do kind activities for others and share why it
is important.

1 min *State the Objectives (grade-level terms). The student should be able to say:

● I can share ways of spreading kindness to others

● I can perform acts of kindness for people in my life

6 min *Instructional Input or Procedure

The students will listen to the story The Kindness Snippet Jar. After the story is
complete, the teacher will create an anchor chart that has a drawing of a jar on it and
the words “Our Class Kindness Jar”.

TTW ask “How was the kindness note able to end up in the jar?”

TSW turn and talk to a partner about the question asked. During this time the teacher
will walk around the classroom to hear student discussions, and engage in their
conversations. Possibly by asking an additional question to the partner group to
further their thinking, or agreeing with what they are sharing.

TTW pick two-three students to share their discussions with the class.

TTW say “We can be kind to our friends every day by helping them out with things
like zipping their backpack, picking up their water bottle, etc. Just like the sticky
notes friends were able to help him become a part of the Kindness Jar!”

5 min *Modeling

TTW ask a student to come to the front of the class.

TTW instruct the student to give a compliment to another student.

TSW find a classmate to give a compliment to, and the student they chose will
complete the interaction by saying thank you, giving a hug, etc.

TTW share with the class why that action was kind and how we need to say thank
you to those who are being nice to us because it is important we are nice back.

TTW give a high five to the student who modeled kindness and thank them for their
help.

10 min *Check for Understanding

TTW will check for understanding by creating an anchor chart that has a drawing of
a jar on it and the words “Our Class Kindness Jar”.

Prior to passing out the sticky notes to the class, the teacher will draw an example of
kindness on a sticky note. TTW also will label her drawing to encourage students
who can write words or partial sentences to do the same.

TTW pass out sticky notes to each student and instruct them to draw a picture of an
act of kindness they have seen or done.

TSW draw a picture on their sticky note of their act of kindness. TSW share and
discuss with their table friends what they are drawing while they are working on it.

Once they are finished they will stick their picture up on the classroom kindness jar
for everyone to see!

8 min *Guided Practice

TTW will say we are going to play a group game called Kind or Trash.

TTW have cards with various kind or unkind actions on them that will be read aloud
to the class.

TTW read an action card to the class.

TSW respond to the action card by shouting together if it is kind or trash.

If the action is kind the teacher will keep it, if it is trash the teacher will choose a
student to crumple it up and throw it away.

This will be repeated until all of the action cards are used.

10 min *Independent Practice

TTW give each student their own “I can be kind by” activity sheet. This will be
completed in their writing station during literacy station time.

TSW use the activity sheet to draw a picture and then below write a way they can be
kind to others. After their drawing is complete they will share what they drew with
their partner in stations.

1 min *Assessment (formal or informal)

TTW will informally assess by observing the students for the remainder of the day
watching for acts of kindness. TTW write down any that is noticed on a sticky note
and stick it to the class kindness jar to share with the class at the end of the day
praising our friends for showing each other kindness!

“Our friend ____ helped out ____ by picking up their water bottle”
“Friends helped out other friends by helping clean up their stations”

1 min *Closure

Before students leave the teacher will read a few of the kind actions from the
kindness jar out loud to the class.

Together as a class, they will restate the “I can” statements and the teacher will
remind students of the importance of being kind to others and encourage them to
spread their kindness in and outside of the classroom.
Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning
style).

Advanced Learners: Have the students who can write words or small sentences add a
description of their kindness drawing. This could be done on the sticky note as well as the I
can be kind worksheet.

Struggling Learners: Have the students tell me what their kind action is after they draw it.

Learning Styles:
Visual- story read to them via YouTube video, Kindness Jar with their drawings stuck to it
Verbal- instruction; how to be kind, their drawing, and how to complete their worksheet
Kinetic- getting students up to play the game, and help me model kindness

Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the
objective(s)? What part of the lesson would you change? Why?
