OVERVIEW

Since political science as a discipline, what is a discipline? Can political science

be legitimately called a science? A discipline is a subject that is taught a field of study;
training that corrects, molds or perfects the mental faculties or moral character; Political
science is a discipline that is taught in most colleges and a special field of study which
has matured, especially in the past decades or so. As such it has its core competencies and
professional adherent either as practitioner or as academicians / theoreticians.

Science is a broad sense is the systematic enquiry building towards an ever more
highly differentiated set of ordered propositions about the empirical world. In this broad
sense political science can legitimately be considered a science. However, it cannot be
called a science in the same sense as the physical science such as chemistry or physics
because the covering laws of these science are so strong that they can be described by the
word “always and never”. On the other hand, when we deal with political science, since
its subject matter are men with freedom, things are only ever more or less likely to
happen. As in the social sciences, the findings of political science are couched in
probabilistic form rather than that of necessity/certainty. Political science can then be

defined as the science of the form and principles of civil government and the extent and
manner of its intervention in public and private affairs. Politics is defined by Webster as
1.) The science of civil government and (2) political affairs in a party sense. Politics in
the first sense can also be called an art, the art of governing other people, and as such, it
is one of the most noble professions. However, in the second sense, as engagement in
political affairs in a party sense, politics could indeed be dirty because it could involve
the use of dirty tricks and shenanigans.

Other political scientist characterize politics as the constrained use of social power
and the study of politics is the study of nature and source of those constrained and the
techniques for the use of social power within those constraint. Social power is the power
of people over other people. Dahl described power thus: “X has power over Y in so far as
(a) X is able, in one way or another to get Y to do something (b) that is more to X’s liking
and (c) which Y would not otherwise have done.”

LESSON PROPER

What is political science as a discipline? What is a discipline? Can political

science be legitimately called a science?

A discipline is a subject that is taught, a field of study; training that corrects,

molds or perfects the mental faculties or moral character. Political science is a discipline,
a subject that is taught in most colleges and special field study which has matured
especially in the past decades or so. As such it has its core competencies and professional
adherents either as practitioners or as academicians/theoreticians.

Science in a broad sense, is the systematic enquiry building towards an even more
highly differentiated act of ordered propositions about the empirical world. In this broad
sense, political science can legitimately be considered a science. However, it cannot be
called a science in the same sense as the physical sciences such as chemistry or physics

because the covering laws of these sciences are so strong that they can be described by
the word “always” and “never”. On the other hand, when we deal with political science,
since its subject matter are men with freedom, things are only ones more or less likely to
happen. As in the social sciences, the findings of political science are crouched in
probabilistic form rather than that of necessity/certainty. Political science can be defined
as the science of the form and principle of civil government, and the extent and manner
of its intervention in public and private affairs.

Politics is defined by Webster as (1) The science of civil government and (2)
Political affairs in a party sense, politics could indeed be dirty because it could involve
the use of dirty tracks and shenanigans.

Other political scientist characterize politics as the constrained used of social

power and the study of politics is the study of the nature and source of those constraints
and the techniques for the use of social power within those constraints. Social power is
the power of people over other people. Dahl described power thus: x has power over y in
so far as (a) x is able, in one way or another to get y to do something (b) that is more to
X’s liking and (c) which Y would not otherwise have done power could also be defined
as the control over the mind of another person by reason of love or revenge or respect, a
person towards another or by reasons of the expectation of a future evil disadvantage to
be avoided.

Defining politics in term of the constrained use of power would give us the idea as
to what constitutes the essence of politics. It is the constraints under which political
actors operate and the strategic maneuvering that they occasion and that occurs within
them that constitutes the essence of politics. The study of politics consists essentially in
the analysis of those constraints, where they come from how they operate, how political
agents might operate within them.
