Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to Political Science as a discipline. This aims to provide the different
ways in which political scientist study the phenomena of politics and will deepen the student’s understanding of political life as both
a thinker and a citizen, provide full contemporary introduction and overview of governments and politics in the 21 st century. It is also
designed to present the core idea that politics concerns conflicts as well as cooperation regarding matters for large groups of people.
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the discipline’s concepts, terminologies and methods, theories and structures, and
structures of government, bureaucracy, and global politics including international organizations and to explore instances of applied
political science through real world examples.

Program Outcomes:

1. Compare, contrast, and classify the major concepts in the discipline


2. Recognize and define the distinctiveness of the discipline, its subfields, theories, and methods
3. Design and execute research inquiries using appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods guided by theories or conceptual frameworks
4. Demonstrate writers visual and oral presentation skills to produce and present analytical reports
5. Critique, judge and respond to current issues and problems based on a substantive understanding of the historical and contemporary development in the
national and global contexts
6. Develop a predisposition towards ethical political involvement and practice in various forms and on different levels of engagement

At the end of the first year, students are expected to be provided with the central concepts and questions of Political Science.

Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, you will be able to:

1. Describe the origins, elements, and principles of State


2. Identify and evaluate different kinds of government
3. Discuss and explain the purpose and functions of State
4. Demonstrate the influence of public opinion on the political decision-making process
5. Describe and analyze the cause of international conflicts; and
6. Identify and assess the influence of major international organizations

Introduction:

This course guide for Fundamentals of Political Science is designed to help you understand the basic principles of political science by combining historical
study of the discipline’s greatest thinkers with analysis to contemporary issues. Students will be able to identify and discuss the questions that perennially
drive the field of political science, including (among many others): “How we define the changing nature of power”?, “How do we differentiate between legitimate
and illegitimate governance”?, “What are the differences between political institutions and Political behavior”?, and “How do leaders define who gets to be heard
and counted in a political community”?.

This section tells you about the general guidelines for completing this course guide. For specific guidelines and information, kindly review your student manual
or your module guide (if applicable).

2. Schedule properly your reading assignments and your activity accomplishments.
3. Make sure that you do things one at a time. Read the materials and watch the videos over and over until you are able to get the point of the lesson
4. You will be assessed through formative and summative methods. Kindly see requirements section at the end of this learning packet.
5. You are expected to submit your activities/ exams on the dates indicated in this learning packet. Late submission of activities/ exams will be dealt based
on classroom policies.
6. Your scores for assignments will be notified to you throughout your period of study.
7. You can learn a great deal from discussing aspects of your learning packet with others. Opinions and insights formed while discussing with other people
are no less valuable than those you form while reading books or listening to lectures. There’s nothing wrong in discussing with your classmates but it
should be done before you begin your individual activities. But when you sit down and do individual activities you are expected to work alone and not to
use the work of others (in its entirety or in part) as if it is your own.
