Collaborative Inquiry Group or Faculty Growth Cohort process

● A cohort of 4-7 members who commit to improving their practice through structured interactions (protocols) in a
non-evaluative setting.
Have any of you ever heard of or used
● During each Collaborative Inquiry meeting, all members are active participants.
● At designated times, each faculty member shares their focusing question or area in which he/she would
especially welcome feedback.
a tuning protocol
● The presenter might want feedback on assessing a student’s work, a dilemma, a rubric, lesson or project
planning, an idea that needs to be built, etc.
● One member acts as the facilitator, and guides the group through the appropriate protocol. The specific protocol
will depend on the faculty member needs

What is a Tuning Protocol? Tuning Protocol Process

For the presenter who wants to fine tune his/her practice:
This protocol is similar to the one that Eric Hudson used for our Collaborative Calibration activity.

The Tuning Protocol (*Times are approximate and can be adjusted as needed)
● It is a flexible critique tool used to gather focused feedback to 1. Introduction & Presentation................................................5 min.
The presenter has an opportunity to share the context for the student work and share their focusing question.
aid in planning.
 2. Clarifying Questions............................................................2 min.
Participants have an opportunity to ask “clarifying” questions in order to understand the context for the student
work.
3. Examination of Student Work Samples or artifacts..............5 min.
● We will use the following the Tuning Protocol and the Issaquah Participants look closely at the artifact, focusing particularly on the presenter’s focusing question.
Protocol during our Faculty Growth Cohort meetings. 4. Pause to reflect on feedback...............................................1 min.
Participants take a couple of minutes to reflect on what they would like to contribute to the feedback session.
5. Feedback.............................................................................3 min.
Participants share feedback with each other while the presenter is silent.
6. Reflection/Debrief...............................................................5 min.
Presenter speaks to those comments/questions he or she chooses while participants are silent.

Issaquah Protocol Process

For the presenter who wants to grapple with a dilemma and get tangible solutions:
The Issaquah Protocol (*Times are approximate and can be adjusted as needed)

1.

2.
Introduction & Presentation................................................3 min.
The presenter has an opportunity to share a dilemma without a known answer.
Clarifying Questions............................................................2 min.
I want you to think about which protocol
Participants have an opportunity to ask “clarifying” questions in order to understand the context of the dilemma.
3.

4.
Interpretive Listening by the Group....................................4 min.
Participants interpret the dilemma. “What this means to me is…”
Presenter Check-in .............................................................1 min.

Presenter confirms or clarifies the participants’ interpretations.
5. Probing Questions by the Group..........................................2 min.
Give the group 2 minutes to come up with a probing question. (Participants name paradoxes or controversies
without asking or implying that there is a solution.)
