Chapter I: INTRODUCTION

Project Context
The project entitled Water Alert System using Arduino Uno with SMS and

call notification is a combination of hardware and software components

which can monitor the water level using Arduino Uno and at the same time it

can notify to the constituents with SMS and call notification.

One of the biggest problems in today’s time is that as climate change

has occurred, it has created unpredictable phenomena specifically the

occurrence of flood. Flood is unavoidable natural disaster that can cause

severe damage to properties and lives of the people. Flood occurs at any

time, especially when the water overflows from the river, lake or from

heavy rainfall. In this project, it helps individual, households and

community to monitor the water level in flood prone areas with the help of

water alert system that will automatically alarm when the water level arise

and will notify through SMS and call notification to the MDRRMC and BDRRMC

personnel.

Purpose and Description of the Project

Nowadays, as what we’ve observed heavy rains frequently occurred which

can cause rivers and canals to overflow that will lead to flood. In this

reason, this project the “Water Alert System Using Arduino Uno with SMS and

Call Notification”, has been develop an alert system that will

automatically trigger when the water level arise. This project is

recommended to be used in flood prone area such as places near at rivers

and coastal areas.

When the flood occur, the water sensor will sent signal to the

microcontroller circuit and will automatically trigger the buzzer that will
alarm the people near in the area and will send a short message service

(SMS) by the use of the GSM module to the Local Government Unit personnel

and it will continue to update until the water level detected returns to

normal. As the water level continues to rise, the process is repeated. The

concept of an SMS-based warning system will be develop and proposed as a

result of the widespread use of mobile phones has become popular mode of

communication among people all over the world. Every mobile phone has the

ability to communicate because it includes a GSM or also known as the

“Global System for Mobile Communication”, this device is very helpful in

terms of giving real time information to said issue or problem.

Objectives of the Project

General Objectives
This study aims to develop a Water Alert System with SMS and Call

Notification.

Specifically, it aims to

1. Design a system that will alert when the water level arises by the

use of buzzer alarm.

2. Design a system that will send a notification through SMS and call

notification to the users.

3. Design a system that will provide an early warning system for the

officials of the barangay to notify their residents about the water

level in the flood prone areas.

4. Determine the quality of the developed system based on ISO/IEC

25010:2011 Systems and Software Quality Requirements and Evaluation

(SQuaRE) Quality Model.
