Filipino Hospitality as its Finest: The Case of Ayala Land Hotels and Resorts
Corporation's hotel chain Seda

OVERVIEW
The Seda Hotel brand has expanded into city hotels, resorts, and serviced residences.
The legendary Raffles Hotel greets guests, both local and international, with its distinct
charm and sophistication. Seda is the Filipino word for silk, and its luster and strength are the
two words that represent the emergence of the hotel brand. Seda hotels by AyalaLand Hotels
and Resorts Corp. (AHRC) are set to be the leading Filipino-owned hospitality brand catering
to both local and global travelers. In less than two years, four Seda hotels with 665 rooms
have already opened in Ayala Land mixed-use communities.

PROBLEM/S
The global pandemic COVID 19 has had a significant impact on every industry. Seda
Hotels is one of the companies that has suffered financial losses as a result of the pandemic.
Despite the challenges, the hotel group remained true to its core as a proudly Filipino brand.

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
Ayala Land Hotels and Resorts Corp.'s biggest brand is its homegrown Seda Hotels
which operates in 11 strategic locations throughout the country. Since the brand was founded
in 2012, it has adhered to the highest levels of hygiene and safety so that both guests and
employees alike feel safe.

EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE
"Malasakit," the Filipino word for empathy and going the extra mile out of concern
for others — is a unique Filipino trait that the Seda Hotels company has truly practiced
especially in this current worldwide health crisis. SafeAtSeda enhanced health, and safety
program was detailed but practical and simple to avoid further difficulties in an already
challenging situation.

RECOMMENDATION/S
The legal obligation for hotels to ensure the safety or well-being of their guests,
known as the duty of care, has always been an important aspect of hotel operations. Because
of the coronavirus pandemic, many hotels are currently closed, and many hoteliers are
already concerned about how they will exercise their Duty of Care once they reopen.
The tourism industry must be prepared for significant changes in consumer demand
following COVID-19. Hotels must demonstrate how they will maintain the highest levels of
hygiene after restrictions are lifted and demand for travel returns is expected to increase
significantly.

POSSIBLE RESULTS AND IMPACT AND OBSTACLES TO IMPLEMENTATION

The hotel industry was one of the industries that suffered the most during the early
months of the COVID-19 pandemic. With new cases of infection on the rise, here's what we
can learn from their experiences to prepare for future crises. With quarantine periods, border
closures, and travel restrictions, the global pandemic caused massive losses in the hospitality
and tourism industries. During the early months of the pandemic, hotel occupancy in
Indonesia fell. Hotel managers take precautions to protect visitors and employees to avoid
problems caused by rising infections. Given the industry's multi-stakeholder nature, hotels
must collaborate with the government and industry to develop policy in times of crisis. They
must also collaborate with labor unions to provide safety nets for their laid-off employees.

Simultaneous Disaster in Southeast Asia: Is Risk Outpacing Resilience?

By Christopher Chen, Foo Yen Ne, and Margareth Sembiring

OVERVIEW
Since July 4, 2018, the Southwest Monsoon's heavy rainfall has caused floods and
landslides in 9 of Myanmar's 14 regions. On August 6, 2018, floods affected more than
150.000 people. Schools have been closed as a result of the flooding, which also caused harm
to homes and crops. Surging flood waters damaged a bridge on a major highway connecting
Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyitaw, forcing the evacuation of more than 50,000 people. A
saddle dam from the Lao hydropower project Xe Pian-Xe Nam Noy collapsed on July 23,
2018. An estimated 25,000 people were evacuated after tides swept into neighboring
Cambodia. The dam's collapse was referred to as a "accident" by the South Korean company
that is a partner in the joint venture.

PROBLEM/S
In 9 out of Myanmar's 14 regions, flooding and landslides were caused by heavy
rainfall. As of August 6, 2018, there had been 17 reported fatalities and over 150 000 people
affected by the flooding. The flooding has caused damage to homes and crops, forced the
closure of schools, and disrupted the nation's rice supply. The main concern was the residents'
ability to support themselves if their basic needs weren't met.

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
Regional cooperation is used by ASEAN Member States to "jointly respond to
disaster emergencies." This framework offers a strong foundation for enhancing the regional
disaster response system. In order to improve their capabilities and widen their options,
ASEAN members may hire more personnel. Additionally, they might offer more structure to
foster connections. Meetings with the respondents could be held at the home, if they so
choose.

EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE
For an alternative strategy to be considered successful, it must be understood and
pertinent. The purpose of this issue was to determine if the situation would exceed the level
of responsibility that the residence was expected to have.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Women can receive disaster response training from YAKKUM Emergency Unit,
which includes instruction in first aid and evacuation methods. It aims to raise community
awareness of the importance of practical preparedness strategies and emergency response
systems. Other Southeast Asian countries should expand and adopt programs of a similar
nature.

Possible Result and Obstacles to Implementation

They might be worried about the residents' lives after the incident. The general public
will unquestionably appreciate the work done in these fields. T ey will still come up with a
solution even if tragedy strikes and they lose a lot of money because they want to address this
problem. They will communicate and try to help.
