Source Sorting

Type of lesson: Center Activity

Standards: LAE: ELA.6.R.2.3 Analyze authors purpose and multiple accounts of the same event
or topic
SS: SS.6.W.1.3 Interpret primary and secondary sources.

Objectives: Students will understand how to identify the differences between primary and
secondary sources

Materials: sorting cards, template, glue

Procedures:
1. Review as a class what makes sources primary versus secondary.
2. Give specific examples of primary versus secondary sources.
3. Provide and annotate one primary and one secondary source.
4. Split class into groups and have them complete sorting activity.

Evaluation:
Summarize in your own words what is a primary source and what is a secondary source.
