METHODOLOGY FOR REINFORCEMENT WORK

TITLE:
Methodology of reinforcement bars for footings, rafts, pedestal’s ,
columns, plinth beams and Slab.

TOOLS&EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

*Cutting / Bending machine

*Spiral Machine
*Cranes/Hydra
*Hand tools, hand saw, wire cutter, brush, Plier
*Line dory / String
* Measuring tapes
* Calibrated Survey Equipment

PROCUREMENT,STORAGE&HANDLING:

a) The reinforcement shall be ordered & procured from the approved cut &
bend sub-contractor / supplier with all necessary documentation as
required.
b) On receipt of the material on-site, the reinforcement shall be checked against
the documentation to ensure compliance. Once the delivery order and mill
certificate have been stamped Approved and accepted the material shall be
stacked in the storage yards/ lay down area.
c) The storage yards shall be set up to ensure that the quality of the
reinforcement does not fall below acceptable limits before it’s placement at
the site.  To ensure this:
d) Keep material off the ground by supporting by timber / concrete pad at all
times.
e) Keep the material covered whenever possible.
f) Handle and stack material to prevent deformation.

CUTTING&BENDING OF REINFORCEMENT STEEL FOR

SLAB,BEAM,COLUMN,FOOTING,RAFT
 a) The straight bars received at the site will be stacked in the steelyard. The
steel reinforcement shall be stacked clear off the ground and covered with a
polyethylene sheet to protect from moisture.
b) As per the construction program and the priority, the cutting and bending of
steel reinforcement for that particular structural element will commence as
per the approved shop drawings and bar bending schedule or BBS.
c) The cut length will be marked with a steel measuring tape, as shown in the
BBS.
d) The bar will be cut with a shear line cutting machine.
e) For straight bars, after cutting the required numbers, it will be bundled and
tagged with bar mark number and stack for delivery to site.
f) For stirrups and cranked bars, the cut bars will be taken to the bending
machine and bend as per dimensions in the BBS. During the bending
process re-check randomly with a template for dimensions.
g) Upon completing the required numbers, bundle and tag the bars with bar
mark number and stack for delivery to the site.

FIXING OF REINFORCEMENT FOR

FOOTING,PEDASTAL,COLUMN,PLINTH BEAM&SLAB:
a)Steel fixing to be done as per approved shop drawing.
b) The steel fixer the foreman will check the marking tag of the cut and bend steel
and distribute to the designated location in the sequence.
c) Fabricated “cages” not required immediately at the site shall be stored in a
manner similar to the reinforcement bundles and shall be protected properly.
d) Storage of reinforcement in any form shall not be in excessive quantities so as to
minimize storage time and hence degradation of steel material.

SITE INSTALLATION:

     a) Setting out shall be marked by the surveyor prior to proceeding.

b)  Necessary scaffolding shall be provided for binding fixing steel.
c)  Prefabricated steel shall be placed in position as per approved shop drawings of
the related structural member i.e. raft, column, beam, slab, and other
structural members.
d)  Approved 1.6mm dia. galvanized / black annealed mild steel wire shall be used
to tie reinforcing bar.  The ends of the wire shall be bending back away.
e)  Spacer blocks of approved type will be used to maintain the cover.
f)  Support the reinforcing bar by approved spacers appropriately to prevent
displacement during concreting operation. The thickness of the cover block
shall be as per approved shop drawings or specifications.
g) Overlap location and additional bar shall be maintained as per approved shop
drawings.
h) After completion of the main mesh for raft, column starter bars shall be
provided as per setting out details.
i) For columns, the steel cages shall be pre-fabricated. Columns shall be erected at
locations by mobile crane if there are more columns to be erected in an area
and when the working platform is not available.
j) For horizontal elements, after completion of the slab decking, the bottom-most
layer will be completed first, followed by the upper layers. Spacers and chairs
will be provided as required.
k) While fixing of steel reinforcing bars, care will be taken to see that proper
concrete cover is available for the bottom, top, sides, and edges.
l) Wherever reinforcements are placed in two or more layers, a minimum 25mm
spacer shall be placed between layers. All bars in upper layers must be placed
directly above those in the bottom layers.
m) Steel around openings and sleeves shall be provided as per approved drawings.
n) Necessary dowel bars shall be provided wherever necessary as per approved
drawings.
o) Proper anchorage of bars for raft, beam, and slab shall be provided as per
approved shop drawings and specifications.
p)  All reinforcement must be cleared to ensure that it is free from all oil, dust, and
deleterious materials.
q) After the completion of the installation of steel reinforcement and EHS inserts
inspection and approval shall be done prior to concrete pouring.

SECTION-6 : HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

The safety of the personnel and properties is to be given prime importance

and all the works to be carried out without causing any accidents or
property damages. Reinforcing bars involves the following activities.
*Storage
*Transportation of steel bars
*Fabricating and fixing reinforcement steel.
*Lifting of steel at the site
Adequate access and egress should be provided to the site for work. All the
personnel should wear basic personnel protective equipment. All the
equipment, tools, and tackles being used for the work should be in good
working condition and maintained. All the personnel will be provided with
toolbox talk on the procedures to execute the work safely .

SAFETY GUIDELINE TO BE FOLLOWED:

a) Bar banding and cutting yard shall be properly cordoned/barricaded and

entry shall be restricted.
b) Re-bar banding and cutting machines shall be handled by trained
operators / skilled workers.
c) Shifting of cut re-bars shall be done by mechanical means as far as
possible. When rebars are shifted manually, it shall be done with proper
care proper balance shall be maintained. Clear access shall be provided for
the shifting of rebars.
d) Proper support shall be given to the column bars by means of rings /props
against undesirable sway.
e) Free ends of the binding wires shall be bent inside to avoid injuries.
f) Proper PPE viz. leather /cotton hand gloves, goggles, etc. for the people
handling /shifting and cutting/tying
Of rebar, shall be used for protection from injury and other occupational
diseases.

SECTION-7 : QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY CONTROL

Quality control and assurance shall be strictly followed as per the approved quality
assurance plan and work method statement.

 The reinforcement steel bars to be of approved quality and company

 MTC of the steel bars to be received from the manufacturer company.
 Reinforcement should kept above from the ground level that no moisture content will
destroy the steel and thus rusting of steel is decreased.
 Reinforcement steel should be tested in a third party laboratory and test reports should
submit to PMC.
 Reinforcement cutting lengths and BBS should submit to PMC and take approval.
 Reinforcement cutting/bending/binding to be done according to structural approved
drawings.
 Any deformations is observed then it should be informed to PMC and should take approval
for further works.
