1. Introduction

2. Scope
This Technical Specification covers the minimum requirements for all furnishing labor, tools,
materials, supplies, services, and transportation necessary to design, detail, furnish,
manufacture, assemble, paint, test, and delivery of [complete with the quantity of Thickeners],
for the [name of project and proprietary].

The Supplier is not limited to minimum requirements and shall supply all control and
protection features to ensure the safe and efficient installation and operation of the Tailing
Thickeners.

The thickeners supply shall be complete in every aspect and ready to operate after
installation and connection.

Compliance with this Specification does not relieve the Supplier of its responsibility to supply
the Tailing Thickeners such that they have satisfactory safety, operability, maintainability and
reliability and are designed for continuous full load service for the design life.

Approval by purchaser (or his representative) of the Supplier’s design and calculations does
not relieve the Supplier of the responsibility for the integrity of the design.

If the Supplier has knowledge of any facts which may significantly affect the design of the
equipment, but are not covered in this Specification, the Supplier shall prior [delete or complete
where applicable]

Modifications and / or exclusions to this specification, in order to improve the performance of the
equipment, may be accepted, prior [delete or complete where applicable]. No deviations shall be made
from specifications without prior [delete or complete where applicable].

2.1 Work Included

Vendor shall supply complete and operational the Tailing Thickener, including all necessary
accessories services, except as specifically excluded in section 2.2 below. The work shall
include, but not be limited to the following (as applicable and in accordance with the Data
Sheets):

 Hydraulic rake drive, with hydraulic motors and planetary gearbox

 Automatic lifting device, including hydraulic lifting cylinders

 Hydraulic power unit for rake drive and lifting device, complete with pump and electric
motor, pressure accumulators for emergency rake lifting, flow divider valve hydraulic
cylinders, coupling and guards, fluid reservoir with filtered breather, level switch,

immersion heater, torque transmitter, filters, relief valve, switches, gauges and
control valves.

 All pipes, hoses and fittings required for the hydraulic power unit and required to
connect the hydraulic power unit to the hydraulic motor and cylinders.

 Center column with internal ladder to allow for access from bridge platform to tunnel
ground

 Two short and two long rake arms, with scrapers

4.1 Associated Documents

5. Operating Conditions
The thickeners shall be designed to operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, with an
availability of not less than [complete] %. The thickener, including all components, ancillary
equipment, and all minor items not specifically referred to, but essential for the safe and
satisfactory operation of the thickener, shall be designed to withstand heavy and abrasive
dust and slurry loads, harsh use by plant personnel, hot and humid conditions and wash
down with hand held pressurized hoses.

5.1 Environmental Conditions


The thickener will be installed outdoors, and will operate under the environmental conditions

The design of the equipment, its components and accessories are Supplier’s responsibility.
The Supplier is also responsible for the equipment and materials delivered by his sub-
suppliers.

The equipment shall be manufacturer's standard size and heavy-duty design suitable for the
conditions specified. All equipment and structures included in the supply shall be of proven
design, modern and reliable. Standard replacement parts and components shall de readily
available and easily replaceable.

Components and the system shall be designed so it can be conveniently cleaned in place.

Sufficient space shall be provided to the equipment, controls and auxiliary equipment for
access by the operating and maintenance staff.

The equipment shall be manufacturer's standard size and heavy-duty design suitable for the
conditions specified. All equipment and structures included in the supply shall be of proven
design, modern and reliable.

All pipe connection flanges to inlet and outlet services (water, air) shall be in accordance with
the project standards.

The thickener feedwell shall be designed for use with flocculants and shall include either an
integral or external operation system to remove entrained air from the feed slurry. The
feedwell shall be designed to efficiently introduce the flocculated slurry to the thickener and to
prevent short circuiting of the feed to the thickener overflow.

Thickener rake arms and scrapers shall be designed to withstand the peak torque output.

Thickener mechanism shall be equipped with a rake lifting device with a minimum lift of
[complete]. Lifting device shall be fully automated type automatically raising the rotating
mechanism when torque overload occurs. The mechanism shall automatically lower as
torque decreases.

Gear drives shall be designed with an adequate service factor AGMA not less than [complete
with factor] to ensure long life and trouble free service. The mechanism shall have antifriction
bearings on gear shafts, with main bearings of suitable design to support the drive shaft and
rake assembly. Mechanism shall be enclosed in a properly sealed housing to prevent leakage
of oil and entrance of dust, water or other contamination, and shall have an oil collection pan.

The equipment shall be provided with the required safety devices to protect the operators
against accidents as well as the equipment.

The equipment and components shall be designed for easy inspection, cleaning and repairs
and for operation in which continuity of service is the main consideration.

Vibration level of the equipment shall be the minimum possible.

Tanks feed box, connection, discharge boxes and equipment parts in contact with abrasive
and/or corrosive agents shall have an appropriate surface protection, such as rubber lined or
protective paint. Stainless steel components shall not be painted.

The thickener and its motors shall be inspected and tested for compliance with the Supplier
standards.

Piping connections of equipment shall be in accordance with ANSI Standards.

Supplier shall state any exceptions to this specification in writing.

The useful expected life period of the plant is [complete]. The design and function of this
equipment, components and accessories are Supplier's responsibility. Thickener shall be
designed for a minimum of [complete] life expectancy .

6.1 Components
6.1.1 Tank
The tank shall include an overflow launder with a pipe connection. The overflow launder and
discharge box shall be sized to take the full flow.

When is required, an adjustable weir plate shall be included.

When a concrete tank option is requested or offered by the supplier, its own standard design
for the intended service under the specified conditions shall be quoted. Thickener drawings
shall indicate the static, live and dynamic loads requirements for the concrete tank options,
when operating under maximum load conditions. The supplier shall indicate the maximum
load conditions considered.

Thickener tanks shall have a bottom floor sloped to ensure gravity flow.

6.1.2 Mechanism
The thickener mechanism will consist mainly of:

6.1.2.1 Bridge
Considerate an operating walkway according to de corporate design. Must be
considerate at least the weight of the operational personnel, operational loads, thermal
loads, thermal loads, the seismic zone and wind, etc.

The design must include the possibility of removing the central bearing of the drive unit
without having to dismantle the entire thickener.

 Centre Column Supported Mechanism

The thickener mechanism shall have rake arms supported by cables or spiders and
braces suspended from the cage. If cable suspended, the rake arms shall be attached to
the lower cage by a means that will allow the arms to swing up when encountering heavy
underflow loads or obstructions. Two drag arms shall be cantilevered from the upper
portion of the cage and shall support the rake arms in their raised position .

The superstructure will be supported at the tank center column.

Hollow center column, shall include an emergency internal cat ladder, to allow for access
from bridge platform to tunnel ground.

6.1.2.2 Rake Drives


The Supplier shall propose the drive system configuration. The drive system shall provide
a smooth soft acceleration in order to avoid tangential oscillations.

Rake drive and lifting device shall be powered by a hydraulic unit considering an
independent motor and pump for each service. Hydraulic rake drive and lift system shall
meet the following requirements:

 Rake operating speed may be adjustable and in accordance with the decantation
rate, but speed setting shall be lockable

 Hydraulic power unit shall be furnished as a complete operating unit considering


necessary spaces and proper component arrangement for maintenance
operations

 Rake mechanism and its drive shall be capable to operate under the design
conditions

 Drip pan shall be provided under entire hydraulic unit, including a drain pipe to
the edge of thickener tank

 Rakes shall be fabricated from structural members that minimize drag and build-
up of slurry

 The rakes must be designed to effectively take the decanted solid material to the
center of the discharge cone.

For thickeners that use a central column as a support of the mechanism, a drive cage will
be used to connect the rakes to the drive system.

For thickeners that use a drive cage, such must have devices for supporting the rakes.
Also, the drive cage will be connected directly to the central drive unit.

Rake components and their connection to the centre column shall be designed to safely
withstand the operation conditions, in addition to gravity forces, the most adverse
condition of torque.

6.1.2.3 Pulp Feeding and Feedwell


Feeding launder(s) as feedpipe will be considered. The feeding launder(s) will enable the
feeding of the pulp to the feedwell at a speed between [complete] m/s. The feedwell will
be dimensioned to enable the homogeneous mixing of the diluted pulp with the flocculant.

The feedwell design will aim at maximizing the effectiveness of the flocculant, optimizing
its spreading and mixing, which can be achieved hydraulically or mechanically in the high
capacity feedwell or the feeding launder.

6.1.2.4 Shaft Seals


Shaft seals will be designed for safety and suitability for the intended service taking into
account all normal, abnormal and emergency conditions as specified.

The shaft mechanical seal assembly shall be designed for ease of maintenance and shall be
positioned close to a bearing. Maintenance and replacement of the seal shall be possible
without draining the vessel or removing the rake from the vessel. The rake shall have
provision for the support of the shaft during servicing of the mechanical seals.

Provision shall be made to prevent the ingress of gearbox oil into tank contents as a
consequence of seal failure.

6.1.3 Pipe work/Nozzles


All tank nozzles shall be flanged. Flanges shall be [complete with ANSI specification and
class]

Unless noted otherwise on the data sheets, each thickener shall have four underflow nozzles
as follows:

 two to be connected to underflow pumps


 one to be used as a dump line
 one for the bed pressure/mass sensor
The underflow pump nozzles and the dump nozzle shall be of the same size as specified on
the data sheets. The bed level sensor nozzle is to be specified by Vendor.

The Vendor provide flocculant pipework from the periphery of the clarifier/thickener to the
flocculant application points.

6.1.4 Welding
All welding shall be in accordance with the Structural Welding Code of the American Welding
Society (AWS) D1.1. Unless otherwise imposed by transportation limitations all welding shall
be performed in Supplier’s workshop.

Welding of low carbon steel shall be by shielded or submerged electric arc methods using
correct electrodes for conditions of use in accordance with the AWS D1.1.

Welds shall be solid and homogeneous throughout and within visual standards according to
the AWS D1.1 Code. All welds shall be continuous.

6.1.5 Structural
The structural design of the equipment shall be of the Supplier’s responsibility.

The requirements of the document N° [complete]. Design Criteria for Seismic Requirement of
Equipment shall be also considered.

All structural elements shall be designed to support imposed dead and live loads as specified
herein in addition to their own dead load without exceeding allowable stresses or allowable
deflection. Design factors shall be in accordance with document N°[complete] Criterio de
Diseño Estructural.

Also, the superstructure, walkways, launders and supports shall be designed according with
document N° [complete] Criterio de Diseño Estructural.

6.1.6 Electrical
Electrical design shall include but not be limited to the following: [complete, change and/or
delete the list according to the project requirements]

 Electrical motors and other electrical actuators.


 Junction boxes for power and control.
Wherever possible, the engineering design shall use standardized drawings, specifications
and data schedules.

Vendor provide the following electrical drawings and data in the form of a computer database

 Motor list/ switchgear load schedule, maximum demand


 Field Equipment List
 Control and Instrumentation diagram
 Completed electric motor data sheets for each motor
Cable ladders shall be provided on the thickener bridge and where-ever necessary for
electrical cabling being installed by others.

Power supply and electrical motor requirements are specified in document “Criterio de
Diseño Eléctrico, document N° [complete] and data sheets.

6.1.7 Instrumentation and Controls

The control functions and equipment/instrumentation required for the thickeners are as
follows:

Local operation of the thickener is intended for local start up or maintenance purposes only.
This local operation shall be made from the local control panels supplied as pan of the
thickener package.

The thickener Supplier will be responsible for the complete thickener auxiliary systems
instrumentation and local control panels. Supplier will also provide the facilities and the
engineering information for the equipment control integration into the Owner's plant control
system. This integration is intended as wiring, programming and configuration activities. In no
case the Supplier will be relieved of the thickener control responsibilities, consequently, he
must consider providing all necessary engineering information to ensure proper and safe final
equipment operation.

6.2 Nameplates, Tags and Identification Plates


All equipment shall have permanent corrosion-resistant metal nameplates containing all
pertinent information in order to identify the equipment: TAG N°, model and size information,
P/O N°, Client Identification and Project Name.

All instruments, whether mounted on the equipment or shipped loose, shall have a laminated
and engraved plastic TAG firmly attached by stainless steel wire.

6.3 Materials of Construction

Materials selected shall have suitable characteristics of strength, durability, and abrasion-
resistance for the specified service.

Materials for the construction of the Tailing Thickeners, components and accessories shall be
new, of first use.

AII wetted parts of the thickener mechanism shall be fabricated in ASTM A36 or higher steel
construction with a minimum thickness of [complete] mm, with the proper external coating in
order to prevent corrosion from the sea water as process water.

All in-tank fastener materials shall be equal to or better than the shaft and arm materials.

Asbestos or asbestos-containing materials shall not be used.

7. Painting
The paint and painting procedure shall be the Supplier’s standard, but the Owner reserves
the right to review the paint and the painting procedure and reject it if it is considered
inappropriate. Standard painting system shall be included in the offer for client approval.

The paint shall be appropriate for the duty, handled material and service as described in Data
Sheets and shall consider ambient temperatures and humidity, the dustiness and
corrosiveness of the saline atmosphere.

The above stated, the paint and painting procedure shall be designed to withstand the severe
corrosive characteristics of sea water present in the process slurry.

All exposed metal surfaces shall be prepared, primed and finish painted.

Stainless steel or galvanized steel and machined surfaces shall not be painted.

Machined surfaces not normally painted shall be protected by a coating of anticorrosion


compound during ocean shipment and outside storage. The compound shall be easily
removable in the field with solvents and without the need of mechanical removal methods.

Paint for required additional coats and touch up finishing paint shall be provided by the
Supplier for field application.

Supplier shall provide detailed painting specification and surface preparation.

8. Packing
All equipment shall be provided with appropriate assembly for oceanic crossing.

The load should be capable of resisting damages by shipment to overseas, terrestrial


transportation (truck or train) and be enough resistant to overloads, crane handling, lift trucks,
etc., and to be in a long time store exposed to the environment at the worksite.

All equipment openings shall be sealed to avoid the entrance of strange materials during
shipment and storage. All the threads shall be protected against bumps. Openings shall be
provided with flanged wood covers screwed to the equipment.

All non-protected surfaces exposed to corrosion due to environment shall be protected with
corrosion resistant grease. All the mobile parts shall be applied a corrosion preventive
covering and after that they shall be wrapped with a plastic foil suited for long time exterior
storage.

Equipment and their accessories shall be supplied totally assembled for convenient
transportation.

All pieces and instrumentation mounted to the equipment or loosed supplied in boxes shall
have a corrosion proof metallic tag with equipment information, firmly attached by wire or
screwed to it.

Heavy parts and components shall be provided with lifting lugs suitable for crane handling
and shall be tied to and supported to the equipment to prevent distortions during handling and
transportation.

All load or lump shall be identified with the following information:


 Supplier name
 Equipment name
 Purchase order number
 Item number
 Tag number
 Gross weight
 Other shipment indications

All equipment parts and components shall be tagged previous to shipment. It shall be
prepared drawings with special tag marks for proper construction.

9. Quality Control, Inspection and Testing

9.1 Quality Control


Supplier shall furnish details of the quality control program to be applied during the
preparation or fabrication of equipment. The program shall describe the measures to be used
to control activities affecting the quality of equipment to be supplied in compliance with this
Specification.

Written certificates shall be furnished by Supplier indicating that the equipment has been
manufactured in compliance with the “Supplier Quality Plan” attached to the Purchase Order
and later sent for Owner’s review and acceptance.

9.2 Shop Assembly, Inspection and Testing


Where practicable, equipment shall be fully shop assembled. Prior to shipment all critical
dimensions shall be verified, motions checked and critical parts tested for defects. This work
shall be carried out by the Supplier in the presence of Owner representative and in
accordance with the document “Plan de Inspección de Calidad”.

Owner shall be notified of all dimensional differences from Supplier's drawings that could
affect Owner's foundation or external connection designs.

Prior to disassembly and shipping, all components that must be disassembled for shipment
shall be permanently match marked to facilitate field erection. Supplier shall submit a record
sketch or drawing showing all matched markings to Owner.

Where shop assembly is not required, each component shall have the dimensional accuracy
required to suit field erection.

The equipment shall be transported completely assembled, if practical. If this is not practical,
sub-assemblies shall be as large as transportation facilities permit and all parts shall be
match marked to facilitate field erection.

Shop Testing shall be documented using the Supplier’s standard test reporting procedures.

9.3 Field Assembly and Testing


The Supplier shall provide a detailed erection specification manual including all drawings and
other documents needed for erection. The Supplier shall provide the supervisory personnel
proposed for supervision of equipment erection and all costs associated with such personnel.
The Supplier shall also include an estimate of other skilled and unskilled man-hours required
for erection.

After completion of erection of the equipment, but before commissioning and testing, the
Supplier shall provide a certificate of Field Assembly Inspection to the Owner.

When the plant is in normal operating condition, and the timing is again agreed by both
Owner and Supplier, an operating test-run shall be performed.

Test records shall be preserved while equipment is under guarantee.

10. Guarantee
A performance guarantee test run shall be carried out under the supervision of the Supplier's
personnel. The length and the conditions of this test will be properly agreed between the
Supplier and the Owner.

Supplier shall guarantee that the equipment is capable of continuous operation in accordance
with the design values given in the Data Sheets.

The description and procedure details of the performance guarantee test-run shall be
provided by the Supplier within [complete] days after placement of purchase, for approval by
the Owner prior to carrying out the test-run.

All instruments and measuring devices required for the test-run shall be provided by the
Owner. The list of all required instruments and measuring devices shall be provided by the
Supplier within [complete] days after placement of the Purchase Order.

Supplier shall review Owner's equipment layout drawings and advise location of any
necessary test stations and other facilities.

Supplier shall meet quality standards determined by mutual agreement between Owner and
Supplier.

Operating personnel for the performance guarantee test run will be provided by the Owner.
All other costs associated with the test run, except for normal operating supplies, as well as
the costs of any modifications required to equipment provided as agreed upon by the Owner
for achieving performance guarantee values shall be borne by the Supplier .

Any guarantee exception clause shall be stated in the proposal.
