918.04 SUBMISSION AND DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

918.04.01 Submissions

918.04.01.01 Working Drawings & Fabricator Certification

At least one week prior to commencement of construction, the following information shall be submitted to the
Contract Administrator.

a. Certification of the welding fabricator as required in the Materials section.

b. Working drawings showing the proposed modular bridge.
c. Method and procedures for launching, erecting and removing as recommended by the modular bridge
manufacturer and supplementary methods and procedures proposed by the Contractor.
d. Design calculations indicating that the modular bridge conforms to the requirements of the Ontario
Highway Bridge Design Code or;

Load test information, provided by the manufacturer of the modular bridge, indicating the superstructure
conforms to the requirements for "Evaluation of Existing Bridges" section of the Ontario Highway Bridge
Design Code.

The working drawings, design calculations and load test information shall bear the seals and signatures of the
Design and Checking Engineers.

918.04.01.02 Notice of Erection

The Contract Administrator shall be given written notice at least one week in advance of the commencement
of erection of the modular bridge.

918.04.01.03 Certificate of Conformance

A certificate of conformance bearing the seal and signature of an Engineer, stating that the modular bridge has
been installed according to the stamped working drawings shall be submitted to the Contract Administrator.

918.04.02 Design Requirements

The modular bridge structure shall be designed according to the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code except
that:

1. The following requirements of the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code are not mandatory:

a. Traffic lane widths, side clearance and sidewalks.

b. Deck crossfall and drain outlets.
c. Limitation of maximum deflection. Designing floor beam and diaphragms for jacking and provision of
a protective coating.
d. Fatigue
e. Accessibility for inspection, cleaning and coating, the avoidance of pockets and the provision of drain
holes in pockets and their filling with waterproofing.
f. Camber
g. Provision of two bolts at the end of bracing members.
h. Welding procedures approval when the components are manufactured outside Canada.

2. The following are additional requirements:

a. The traffic lanes, side clearance and sidewalks shall be the same as those on the approaches unless
specified otherwise.
b. Welding design and practice shall conform to CSA W59M, CSA W59.2M or shall conform to an
equivalent recognized national standard effective in the jurisdiction in which the modular bridge is
fabricated.
c. Unless otherwise specified, to ensure the requirements for a multiload path structure are satisfied,
single trusses shall not be used.

3. The following modification is acceptable:

a. Nuts with safety pins or snap rings may be used instead of hexagonal recessed nuts or hexagonal
solid nuts with washers.

918.04.03 Return of Submissions

Two copies will be returned as follows:

a. Stamped with the wording "Permission to Construct".

In this case work can start on receipt. A copy of the drawings shall be available at the site prior to and
during construction.

or

b. Stamped with the wording "Permission to Construct Approved As Noted".

Work can start on receipt of these drawings by the Contractor.

In this case the drawings shall be updated as noted, shall have a stamp affixed signed by an Engineer
stating the drawings have been revised according to the approved as noted comments.

A copy of the updated drawings shall be available at the site prior to and during construction.

or

c. Showing only required changes.

In this case the submission shall be updated as required and the submission process repeated.
