1. Do you live in a house or a flat? ,
We live in a flat on the outskirts of town. It’s not too big because we only have a living
room, a bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall.

2. What is your house like?

It’s a nice house with a small garden. We have a big living room, two bedrooms, a
spacious kitchen, a bathroom, a pantry, and a garage.

3. Do you have a garden?

Yes, we do. There are some fruit trees and lots of flowers there.

4. What do you have in your garden?

We have a big nut tree, two pines, a flowerbed with tulips and roses, and a vegetable
garden. We grow carrots, parsley, tomatoes and green peppers.

5. How big is your flat?

It’s a typical flat in a big block. We have three rooms, a kitchen with a pantry, a
bathroom with a toilet, and a balcony. It’s about 65 square metres.

6. Would you like to move to a bigger house or flat?

Yes, now I share a room with my younger brother and I would like to have a room of
my own.

7. Is it better to live in the countryside or in a city?

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. A big town is crowded and sometimes
dirty but there are a lot of facilities. In the countryside life is more peaceful and the
air is cleaner, but there is not much to do, I think.

8. Do you live in a town or in a village?

I live in a village near the Danube. I think it’s a nice village and I like living there.

9. Do you think it is better to live in a town or in a village?

I like living in my town because there are a lot of shops and cinemas, and a theatre.
I think you can often feel bored in a village.

10. Is it better to rent or own a flat?

I think it is better to own one. If you rent a flat, the owners can ask you to leave any
time. If you live in your own flat, you can stay there for the rest of your life.

11. What is the most important thing for you about a home?
I think a home must be comfortable and there must be enough room for everything.
I like it if my room is bright.

12. How do you get on with your neighbours?

Our neighbours are friendly. We sometimes grill food in the garden together. When we
travel to visit our relatives, they look after our dog and empty the letterbox.
13. Do you usually get together with your neighbours?
No, they don’t spend much time at home. We only ever meet at the entrance to our
building.

14. Do you have your own room?

Yes, I do. It is very nice. It’s not too big but it’s enough for me. I like it because I chose
the furniture myself.

15. What is your room like?

It is quite small but very bright because there is a big window. The walls are light
yellow. There is a bed, a desk, some bookshelves, a wardrobe, and a bedside table
in my room. In the comer there are some pot plants. I put some posters on the walls.

16. Do you have a balcony or a terrace?

We have a terrace where we can have lunch and dinner when the weather is nice. There
are some pots there with flowers which I water every day. My mother sometimes hangs
the washing there.

17. What do you use your balcony for?

We grow some plants and flowers there. There is a round table with two chairs. My
father likes reading sports news there.

18. Which is your favourite place in your house?

I like our living room very much. It’s big and bright with a lot of pot plants. There is
also a big aquarium in the comer. I also like the paintings on the walls.

19. How can you heat a house or a flat?

There are several possibilities. Some people have a gas boiler and radiators or
underfloor heating. Some people have central heating in their flats.

20. What kind of floor covering is there in the different rooms of your home?
We have parquet in the rooms and the kitchen is tiled.

21. What are the walls in your home like?

The walls are painted in the kitchen. The bathroom is tiled. The rooms are wallpapered.

22. Do you think houseplants are important?

Yes, I think they make the rooms friendlier. We have a big stand with pots in the living
room and I have a shelf with some pot plants, mostly cacti, in my room.

23. How can you protect your home from getting too hot in summer?
You can have shutters or rolling shutters. Some people have Venetian blinds or roller
blinds. More and more people are buying air conditioners.
24. What household equipment do you consider necessary? 1
I think there must be a fridge, a washing machine, a cooker, and a vacuum cleaner
in a house.

25. What is your ideal home like?

I think it should be big and bright enough, and well-equipped. There should not be
noisy neighbours. It’s good to have at least a small garden where you can have dogs
or cats.

26. What equipment would you like to have in your home?

I would like to have a big TV set with a DVD player, and a dishwasher.

27. What is your kitchen like?

Unfortunately, it is a bit crowded. There is a cupboard, a cooker, a sink, and a fridge
there. There is also a table with four chairs.

28. What is an ideal kitchen like?

I think it is quite big with all the necessary equipment. There must be a big table, a
modern kitchen unit, a microwave oven, and a dishwasher.

29. What is your living room like?

There is a wall unit with books and ornaments, a three-piece suite, a coffee table, pot
plants, a standard lamp, and a rocking chair.

30. What furniture would you change in your living room?

I don’t like the armchairs. I think they are out of fashion and uncomfortable. I don’t
like the colour and the pattern of the fabric.

31. Where do you have dinner?

We have a dining nook in the kitchen which is not too comfortable but enough for
my family. Sometimes we eat on the terrace.

32. Do you have a pantry?

Yes, we do. It is next to the kitchen. We keep all kinds of food and bottles of drinks
there.

33. How is your bedroom furnished?

There are some pictures and shelves on the walls. There is a big bed with a bedside
table next to a flower stand. My desk is in front of the window. There is a wardrobe
in the corner.

34. What is your bathroom like?

There is a bath, a basin, a medicine cabinet, a mirror, some shelves, and a towel rack
in our bathroom.
35. How would you improve your flat or house?
I would change some of the furniture, and I would buy some new household equipment
for the kitchen.

36. What kind of lighting do you have?

We have a chandelier in my parents’ room, lamps in the other rooms, spotlights in
the kitchen and in the bathroom, a standard lamp in the living room, and some
bedside lamps.

37. How should a child’s room be furnished?

It depends on the age of the children. Small children like toys, so there should be
boxes to keep them in. The carpets and the curtains should be colourful with funny
figures. School children need a desk and a good chair.

38. Who cleans your house or flat?

We clean the house together. My mother cleans the kitchen and bathroom, my elder
sister and I do the rooms, and my father helps us.

39. What housework do you usually do?

I vacuum the carpets and dust the furniture. I sometimes do the washing up. It’s also
my job to water the houseplants.

40. Is there enough storage in your home?

No, the shelves are full, so when I buy a new book, I can hardly find a place for it.

41. What are the surroundings of your home like?

I live in a big housing estate. There are huge blocks of flats and busy roads with lots
of traffic. You can also find some trees and bushes there. There are some playgrounds
but they are not in a good condition.

42. Do you have an attic?

Yes, we do. We keep old clothes and furniture there. Sometimes we go and play there
with my cousins, and we always find something interesting there. Last summer we
found some drawings of my mother in a big box there.

43. Do you have a garage?

Yes, we do. We keep not only the car there but also the bicycles. My father’s tools are
in one of the corners on a shelf.

44. What can you do if you want to improve your home?

You can paint or paper the walls, and buy some new decorations. It’s good if you
change the curtains and buy some pot plants too.
45. What are the typical forms of housing in Hungary?
In villages most people live in houses. In towns there are blocks of flats and apart
ment houses, and on the outskirts there are detached, semi-detached, and terraced
houses.

46. What is your dream house like?

I would like to have a house with a garden. There must be at least four rooms, a big
kitchen, two bathrooms, a double garage, and a swimming pool.
