1. What are your meal-times?
I have breakfast before leaving for school, at about seven. I have lunch at school
around two o’clock. I have dinner at about seven when the whole family is together.

2. What do you usually have for breakfast?

I have a cheese sandwich with a tomato or green pepper, and I drink a cup of tea with
lemon and honey. Sometimes I also eat a boiled egg.

3. What do you usually have for lunch?

I have lunch in the school canteen. We can choose from two set menus. I don’t like
soups but I like meat with rice or potatoes.

4. What do you usually have for dinner?

I eat something cold, for example, a slice of bread with margarine, cold cuts, and
cheese. I usually have a few slices of tomato, cucumber, or green pepper as well.
I drink a mug of milk before going to bed.

5. Do you eat different dishes at weekends than on weekdays?

Yes, I do. At weekends either my mother or my grandmother cooks something tasty.
On weekdays I eat at school.

6. Who cooks in your family?

Usually my mother cooks for the whole family and I often help her.

7. What is your favourite dish?

I have several favourites, such as pancakes, grilled chicken breast with vegetables,
and beef stew.

8. Are you a good cook?

No, I don’t think so. I can only cook simple dishes, for example, tomato soup, pancakes,
and scrambled eggs.

9. What spices do you use?

I use typical Hungarian spices like paprika and pepper, but I like trying out exotic
spices, too, such as curry and oregano.

10. How easy or hard is it to learn to cook?

I think it’s quite difficult. The best way is to start to cook with someone else who can
help you. In summer my mother and my grandmother usually teach me how to make
simple dishes.

11. Do you think it would be a good idea to introduce cooking lessons at schools?
I think it would be a good idea because nowadays young people cannot cook at all.
12. Do you know the recipe for a dish?
Yes, I know how to make pancakes. I need eggs, flour, milk and some salt and sugar.
I mix the ingredients and then fry the pancakes in a frying pan. You can fill them with
cocoa, jam, cottage cheese, or vanilla cream.

13. Why do you think the best cooks in the world are men?
I think men can be very creative and can have a lot of ideas to make tasty new dishes.

14. Do you think that cooking is a time-consuming activity?

It depends on the food. There are dishes that you can cook quickly and dishes that
take quite long to cook.

15. Do you often eat out?

No. We only go to a restaurant when we celebrate a family event. I think it’s quite
expensive to eat out.

16. Where can people go to get something to eat?

People can go to restaurants, grills, fast food restaurants, sandwich bars, canteens, or
coffee shops.

17. What places do you like when you eat out?

I like Greek and Italian restaurants where I can always find something delicious.

18. Have you ever been to an extremely elegant restaurant?

No, not yet, but I’d like to try one out some day. I have only seen extremely elegant
restaurants in films.

19. Have you had any bad experiences in a restaurant?

Yes, unfortunately I have. When we were in a restaurant a few months ago, the food
was bad and the waiters were rather impolite. They also tried to overcharge us.

20. Why are so many self-service and takeaway restaurants being opened in
Hungary?
I think one of the reasons is that people are always in a hurry and don’t have much
time to eat. They don’t have time to buy the ingredients either.

21. What are the differences between traditional and self-service restaurants?
In a traditional restaurant there are waiters and waitresses who serve the customers.
In a self-service restaurant you have to queue, pay at a cash desk, and take your food
to a table.

22. What is the food at the school canteen like?

Most students complain about the food there because it is often greasy and tasteless.
23. How do you prepare when you are expecting guests?
We do the shopping with my parents and then I help my mother to cook. It is my
sister’s job to lay the table.

24. What do you need for a successful picnic?

You should find a good place. You need enough food and drink, blankets to sit on,
and a picnic basket with everything you need.

25. Have you ever tried the food of a foreign country?

Yes, I like tasting unusual food. I like seafood very much and my favourites are crab
and squid.

26. How could you describe Hungarian cuisine?

Hungarian food is rather spicy because we use a lot of paprika. Some people also
make quite fatty food. The Hungarians like to fry meat, cheese and vegetables in
breadcrumbs.

27. What are the most popular national Hungarian dishes?

As far as I know, the most popular dishes are fish soup, chicken soup, stuffed cabbage,
stews and goulash.

28. Are there a lot of foreign restaurants in Hungary?

There are lots of foreign restaurants in big towns and cities. In the town where I live
there are Italian, Greek, Mexican and Chinese restaurants.

29. If you opened a restaurant, what would it be like?

I would open a restaurant for young people. They could not only eat and drink there,
but also listen to good music and use the Internet.

30. What is a traditional substantial English breakfast like?

I have read that it consists of fried sausages, fried tomatoes, beans, bacon, and toast.
I think they usually drink tea for breakfast.

31. How is a real English tea made?

First, you boil the water in a kettle. You pour the boiling water into a teapot where
there are tea leaves. You leave them to brew for a few minutes and then pour it into
cups. You can add sugar, lemon, or milk.

32. What British dishes do you know?

I have heard of fish and chips, and porridge.

33. What is a typical English Sunday lunch like?

The English usually have roast beef with Yorkshire pudding for Sunday lunch.
34. What are the characteristics of American cuisine?
As far as I know, the Americans eat a lot of corn and different kinds of hamburgers
and hot dogs.
35. What table manners do you consider important?
You mustn’t chomp or munch, and talk when your mouth is full.

36. How do you lay the table for dinner?

I put a tablecloth on the table, then I put the plates, cutlery, and glasses on it. I also
put napkins next to the plates, and a cruet in the middle of the table.

37. What do vegetarians live on?

They eat a lot of vegetables and fruit. They make a lot of dishes from soya.

38. Do you think that most people eat far more than is good for them?
Yes, I think that is the reason why there are a lot of fat people.

39. Are eating habits changing?

Yes, I think they are changing. People don’t have enough time for eating, so they eat
too quickly and at different times. They often buy semi-prepared or frozen food
which they can make easily and quickly. Some people say that these foods are not too
healthy.

40. What is your opinion about junk food?

I like junk food although I know it’s not healthy to eat it too often. Hamburgers are
my favourites.

41. Why are fast food restaurants especially popular with young people?
Young people cannot only eat there but also listen to music and talk.

42. Do you ever order meals by phone?

Yes, sometimes I do. When my parents are busy and have no time to do the shopping
and cooking, we order something from a restaurant near our home.

43. When and how is a barbecue organised?

It is usually organised in summer when the weather is nice. Friends get together and
grill some food and eat it in the garden.
