Week 06:

ANIMAL IMMUNE
SYSTEM AND
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
ANIMAL IMMUNE
SYSTEM
It is a large network of organs, white blood cells,
proteins (antibodies) and chemicals. This
system works together to protect you from
foreign invaders that cause infection, illness and
disease
TWO MAJOR KINDS OF DEFENSE
MECHANISMS:
1. Innate Immunity
 Innate, or nonspecific, immunity is the defense system with which you
were born

2. Acquired Immunity
 A type of immunity that develops when a person's immune system
responds to a foreign substance or microorganism, or that occurs after
a person receives antibodies from another source
INNATE
IMMUNITY
TWO LINES OF DEFENSE IN INNATE
IMMUNITY:
1. Skin & Mucus Membrane
 They act as barrier on invading pathogens

2. Chemical Defense Mechanism

 This is often done through phagocytosis
ACQUIRED
IMMUNITY
ACQUIRED IMMUNE SYSTEM UTILIZES TWO
MAJOR CELL TYPES:
1. B-cells
 Cells that produces antibodies

2. T-cells
 Cells that attacks infected cells by phagocytosis or by injecting
chemicals
THREE MAJOR TYPES OF T CELLS:
1. Killer T Cells
 It injects chemicals to pathogens

2. Helper T Cells
 It attracts and assist B cells in antibody production

3. Suppressor T Cells
 It stops the B and T cells after infection
ENDOCRINE
SYSTEM
These are the glands and organs that make
hormones and release them directly into the
blood so they can travel to tissues and organs
all over the body
THREE TYPES OF HORMONAL PATHWAYS:
1. Endocrine Pathway
2. Neurohormone Pathway
3. Neuroendocrine Pathway
