Abstract

A large part of the world's population depends upon the agriculture industry for its source of livelihood.
The growth of the agriculture industry is bound to the two major parameters; quality and quantity yield of
the crops. Polyhouse farming is an excellent method which enables the production of crops with
minimum resources and efforts and maximum yield by providing a controlled condition environment.

This project helps the agriculture fields to manage and control the flow of their landfills with ease. With
minimum hardware and phone app to control the hardware with the palm of their hands.

This solution will help reduce 40% waste of the landfills and farms. with sudden changes in climate . The
polyhouse can handle the environment as per the user. Polyhouse is a methodology to grow crops under
controlled environments with continuous monitoring and analysis.

In a Smart Polyhouse system you can grow your crops in our favourable conditions. We can adjust the
amount of sunlight a particular crop gets, the amount of water the soil or a crop requires and also measure
the moisture content of your soil just using a mobile application.

1. INTRODUCTION

Agriculture is the broadest economic sector that has a major contribution to the development of India.
India is also concentrating on the technological aspects. When technology and agriculture are integrated
together that may yield good results. The conventional method of cultivation requires a tremendous
amount of time, and human effort and requires continuous monitoring.

There are several problems such as unpredictable weather conditions and the plants may be easily
affected by pests and diseases in the conventional method of cultivation. A polyhouse is a closed
environment where the plants are grown on a controlled platform irrespective of climate and location. The
growth and healthy production of plants under controlled favorable conditions in closed or partially
closed spaces are called Polyhouse.

The Polyhouse concept emerged to undertake adverse environmental conditions such as excess rain, high
temperature, extremely cold conditions, airflow, etc.

Polyhouse protects the crops from wind, rain, radiation, precipitation and other climatic factors.

It creates microclimate surrounding the crops that help in maximum growth regarding production and
quality.

Polyhouse also provides higher concentrations of Co2 to increase the production to maximum level;
therefore Polyhouse yields are way higher than open field cultivation.

You can grow the plants in polyhouse conditions that are otherwise impossible to cultivate in that
particular climatic zone. Eg. Growing strawberries in the plains of India.

Polyhouse crops can give you maximum profit in a minimum area under cultivation.

With a maximum level of automation, the number of manual activities, dependency on labor and overall
labor cost is reduced.

3. PROBLEM STATEMENT

There are a lot of technology-based products designed for agriculture. Take a few of them as an example:
turning on a motor through a mobile phone, knowing the power status, checking the PH value of the soil,
checking the properness of fertilizers, etc. Most of the things developed modules are not actually the
solution for farmers. These technologies just help farmers in reducing manpower, but not in improving
yields. There has to be a proper solution in helping farmers get better yields or at the least not to spoil the
crop they have in time.

4. Mini Project DESIGN (PRINCIPLE AND WORKING)

4.1 Block Diagram

Fig 4.1.1 Block diagram

4.2 Block Diagram Description

There are three components used: the Moisture sensor, Servo motor, and Water motor. The moisture
sensor will sense the moisture of the soil and the water motor will on/off the water flow depending upon
the moisture of the soil.
The reading from the moisture sensor is sent to the NodeMcu which further sends it to the database using
the ESP8266 Wi-fi module and then the data is visible in the mobile application.
There is also a feature where we can open and close the roofs whenever necessary. The roofs will
Open/Close with the help of a servo motor

4.3 Circuit diagram and Working

● The polyhouse is equated with the nodemcu, water motors , servo motors and soil moisture sensor.
● The nodemcu helps to connect with the database using esp8266.
● The mobile app displays results and remote control for the polyhouse.
● when user click open roof button the database get updated and nodemcu help to read the data and
execute the command on that base and open the roof of the polyhouse

K.C. College of Engineering 14

● When the user clicks the turn on water pump button the database gets updated and nodemcu helps
to read the data and execute the command on that base and turn on the water pump and put water
in the polyhouse.
● The nodemcu read the soil moisture reading and updates the database with it and the application
showcases the reading as LOW, MEDIUM and HIGH.

Fig 4.3.1 Nodemcu connection with motors and motor driver

Working: The easiest and inexpensive way to control dc water motors is to interface the L293D motor
driver IC with the esp8266.
It helps to control the speed and direction of the motors and even manage the power supply by it.

Fig 4.3.2 Nodemcu connection with soil moisture

Working: The Soil moisture sensor consists of two probes that allow the current to pass through the soil
and get the resistance value to measure the moisture.value.

5. COMPONENTS/TOOL USED
5.1 Components (Hardware)

● NodeMCU: NodeMCU is a low-cost open-source IoT platform. It initially included firmware that
runs on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi SoC from Espressif Systems and hardware that was based on the ESP-
12 module.

● Water Motor: This DC 3-6 V Mini Micro Submersible Water Pump is a low-cost, small-size
Submersible Pump Motor that can be operated from a 2.5 ~ 6V power supply

● L293D motor driver: The L293D is a 16-pin Motor Driver IC which can control a set of two DC
motors simultaneously in any direction.

● Moisture Sensor: Soil moisture sensors measure or estimate the amount of water in the soil.

● Servo Motor: A servo motor is an electrical device that can push or rotate an object with great
precision.

● 9V battery: The nine-volt battery, or 9-volt battery, is an electric battery that supplies a nominal
voltage of 9 volts.

5.2 Software

● Arduino IDE: The open-source Arduino Software (IDE) makes it easy to write code and upload it
to the board. This software can be used with any Arduino board.

● Flutter: Flutter is an open-source UI software development kit.  It is used to develop cross-
platform applications for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, Google Fuchsia, and the web
from a single codebase.

● Database- Firebase: Firebase is a set of hosting services for any application. It offers NoSQL and
real-time hosting of databases, content, social authentication, notifications, or services, such as a
real-time communication server.

8. Conclusion

Automation in polyhouse is highly useful for farmers as they don’t have to monitor the conditions
inside the polyhouse physically and take the required steps.

Polyhouse is a solution for the lack of agricultural lands. We can get more crops from less space in
Polyhouse farming. The system will monitor the conditions and take the respective steps required to
maintain the threshold conditions inside the polyhouse.

K.C. College of Engineering 21

9. Future Scope

● This will help to have more quick controls and monitor over the Polyhouse.
● All the controls in one hand with one tap or voice command to make the action or control the
Polyhouse.
● We can add more like camera views and see the view on the phone and monitor more things.
