BSN- 1D Biochemistry (Lecture)

A Life with Biochemistry

"What is biochemistry?" is a question which pushes man to discover more of what

they are living beyond. As seen clearly, the word "biochemistry" is divided into two words—

bio and chemistry. Along with these two words mentioned are the keys for understanding the

whole context of biochemistry. The prefix bio came from the Greek word "bios," which

indicates or involves life or living organisms (Sons et al., 2017). On the other hand, chemistry

is known to be the study of matter, which includes its properties, composition, and reactions

(Houghton Mifflin Co., 2018). Biochemistry is the branch of science that explores the

chemical processes within and related to living organisms (Biochemical Society and Portland

Press, 2022). Therefore, biochemistry provides insights and broad knowledge relating to the

relationship between life and chemistry, which, I believe, gives humankind a wide

understanding of existence in this world.

The world consists of living and non-living things. One distinct difference between

living organisms and the latter is aliveness. "Without life, would it be possible for a man to

exist?" Using this query can answer the importance of biochemistry for living organisms to

be able to exist and stay alive, most especially for us—humankind. Biochemistry is critical

for man to be able to survive and live in the environment. A broad understanding of

biochemistry is often immensely helpful in understanding complex systems (Rice, A., 2018).

As well as that, it can also spread awareness of preserving and extending life for the present
and next generations, with the fact that life may come to an end due to the appearance of

problems and implications of its body, thus leading to fatalities such as diseases and death.

Biochemistry covers a range of scientific disciplines, including genetics,

microbiology, forensics, plant science, and medicine (Biochemical Society and Portland

Press, 2022). It is concerned with processes that occur at the molecular level. It further

explains what happens to the cells, proteins, lipids, and organelles inside the human body.

The main purpose of biochemistry is to benefit humans in all its forms, particularly in the

diagnosis and treatment of various diseases (Saha, D., 2021). Especially for the medical field,

biochemistry plays a big role as it deals with different methodologies of prevention and

rectification of various disorders, thus bringing the body back to function normally, thereby

helping in leading a healthy life and delaying the process of death (Saha, D., 2021).

As a college student taking a health-related course, it is really important for us to be

able to prepare ourselves and truly understand what we will be handling in the near future.

Biochemistry is undoubtedly one of the most important sciences to fully appreciate if one

want to understand how a sickness started. Understanding the entire context of biochemistry

is necessary for anyone who is planning to cure health issues and diseases. Undoubtedly,

aside from biochemistry as a provider of knowledge and understanding of existence,

biochemistry is likely a source of opportunities for answering biological problems and

difficulties, and also develops different aspects of life for a more sustainable living for

humankind.
