Q1 - INFORMED CONSENT Understanding Student’s Attitudes, Behaviors, and

Knowledge Associated with Natural Alternative Medicine You are being invited to
participate in a research study about understanding student’s attitudes, behaviors, and
knowledge associated with natural alternative medicine. This study is being conducted by
Riley Williamson (706-575-1436, riley.williamson@bobcats.gcsu.edu), a student at
Georgia College. Dr. Liz Speelman is the faculty sponsor. The questionnaire(s) will take
about 10 minutes to complete. This survey is anonymous. Do not indicate your name on
the survey. The questions are worded in a way that does not directly identify anyone. We
will not be collecting IP addresses for this project. The survey has been created using
Qualtrics, so students are protected from any risk of exposing personal information. No
one will be able to identify you or your answers, and no one will know whether or not
you participated in the study. This research project is being conducted because of its
potential benefits, either to individuals or to humans in general. The expected benefits of
this study include gaining an understanding or interest in alternative medicine. The
overall goal would be to encourage more people to consider the use of alternative
medicine so that they no longer need to rely on expensive health services. You are not
likely to experience physical, psychological, social, or legal risks beyond those ordinarily
encountered in daily life or during the performance of routine examinations or tests by
participating in this study. Your participation in this study is voluntary. By clicking “I
agree” you are voluntarily agreeing to participate and you are acknowledging that you
are 18 years of age or older. You are free to stop answering questions at any time or to
decline to answer any particular question you do not wish to answer for any reason. If
you are younger than 18, do not proceed. *Research at Georgia College involving
human participants is carried out under the oversight of the Institutional Review Board.
Address questions or problems regarding these activities to the GC IRB Chair, email:

Q7 - If you have not participated in any form of alternative medicine described
previously, what has stopped you?

If you have not participated in any form of alternative medicine described previously, what has stopped you?

I don't really know much about it.

nothing
I have not participated in alternative medicine because I know what works with my body and what doesn't.
Experimenting with other medications seems dangerous to me and can also negatively interact with a medication
Im already taking.
The unknowns involved such as lack of regulation and peer reviewed scientific studies
Never wanted to.
I do participate in alternative medicine.
I can't afford some of the alternative medicines such as aromatherapy or massages or some teas.
I have not recieved acupuncture treatment because I do not like the idea of having a bunch of needles stuck in me
all at once.
The price or access to a trusted person to perform the alternative medicine (chiropractor)
Don’t need it
I just don’t really care for it and I don’t find myself getting sick often
I have particpated
The cost.
N/A
n/a
not covered by insurance
Cost, time. I don't know much about aromatherapy, etc.
I am prevented from doing more "physical" activities such as yoga and chiropractic care due to chronic physical
pain, and I do not have the money for treatments like acupuncture
N/A
I would love to take a class or speak with a professional about what would be wise to consume. I like the idea of
natural medicines, but it is so much information to consume on your own.
I don't have/ haven't had any symptoms or complications that would cause me to seek out alternative medicine.
I am supposed to take dietary supplements for low iron and anemia, but I do not take them as often as I know I
should.
The fact that I'm not too knowledgeable about them and get most of my information about formal medication
from my doctor. I would like to participate in them one day alongside my medication.
I currently don't feel the need for any medicine of any type but I am looking into taking a natural supplement to
help with my mental focus.
Accessibility
Lot of this field is fueled dangerously by misinformation in comparison to evidence based medicine.
Some of them are equally as expensive/inconvenient as normal medical treatment, and some appear to be hoaxes
not actually beneficial to health as described.
I do not like taking supplements due to the conflicted research that has been published. I would rather not take
something if I know that it could have an adverse effect in the future.
Not knowing where to get authentic materials and what to use.
Convenience - it is much harder to find an alternative medical professional than it is to find a doctor who will
prescribe medication
I do not have the money or insurance to do so
I haven't taken dietary supplements because i am not sure if they really work or if they would cause negative side
effects. I haven't tried them because i do not know enough about them
