AIM

The aim of these experiment is to purify a sample of an organic compound that is

contaminated.

2
PRINCIPLE

Firstly, an appropriate solvent must be chosen.a good solvent is the one that slightly
dissolves the sample in cold, but readily when heated. When dissolving the impure
solid a hot solvent must be used (boiling). The solvent must be added until all the
solute has dissolved. The filter paper must be weted when perfoming gravity filtration
and a short stem funnel must be used.An air space must also be left between funnel
and Erlenmeyer flask.Cooling should be done slowly by air the to water and ice
bath. The filter paper must be weted again with cold solvent when perfoming suction
filtration.

ACTION PLAN

CHEMICALS REQUIRED

 Contaminated organic sample

 Solvent

APPARTAUS

 Short stem funnel

 Filter papers
 Erlenmeyer flask
 Petri dish
 Buchner funnel
 Water bath
 Oven
 Capillary tubes
 Melting point apparatus
 Top pan balance

STEPS FOLLOWED

DISSOLUTION OF IMPURE SOLID

 Add the impure solid to a Erlenmeyer flask then cover it with the solvent.
 If the solute does not dissolve add more hot solvent and boil until all the solid
has dissolved.

GRAVITY FILTRATION

 Fold a filter paper appropriately, and place it into a short stem funnel on the
elernmeyer flask
 Wet the filter paper with hot solvent
 Pour the solution into funnel to filter
 Remove the funnel and cover with petri dish and allow to cool by air
 Finish cooling by cooling in water and ice bath

SUCTION FILTRATION
 Set up the suction filtrate set up
 Wet the filter paper with cold solvent
 Shake the mixture in the Erlenmeyer flask and pour it into the butcner funnel
to filter

4
 Once all the liquid has been sucked put the solid into a pre-weighed dish to
dry and record its mass

DRYING

 Put the crystals in the oven to dry

FINDING THE MELTING POINT

 Put the pure crystals and impure residue from gravity filtration into capillary
tubes
 Place the capillary tubes into the melting point apparatus to determine each
melting point
5

PROCEDURE

About 2g of the contaminated organic compound was weighed on the top pan
balance and transferred into 250ml Erlenmeyer flask. An appropriate solvent was
boiled and added onto the impure compound to dissolve .The solution was then heat
to boil.A fiter paper was prepared and placed on a short stem funnel on a
Erlenmeyer flask. The filter paper was wetted with hot solvent. The hot solution was
then poured onto the funnel to filter. The filtrate flask was covered with petri dish and
allowed to cool by air.Cooling was completed using a water then an icebath. The
suction filtration set-up was prepared. The filtrate paper was was wetted with cold
solvent. The cold solution was poured onto the Buchner funnel to filter the crystals.A
petri dish was weighed on a top pan balance and the mass was recorded.Once no
more water was sucked during the suction filtration, the crystals were removed and
put on the petri dish and dried in the oven. After the crystals have completely dried,
the pure crystals and impure residue obtained during gravity filtration were put into
capillary tubes. The capillary tubes were placed on melting point apparatus and
melting points were discovered.
