Facts
Erik´s Swedish Akvavit is a modern, fresh and aromatic spirit with rich Swedish notes. This
Akvavit is a unique beverage, made with true craftmanship from, as far as possible, locally grown
plants. Macerated, distilled, and matured, from crop to bottle at Spirit of Hven, the family-
owned distillery situated on an island in the strait separating Denmark and Sweden.
This akvavit is made as a homage, to the old Swedish Schnapps traditions, but also as a memory
of the king Erik of Pommern who privileged Landskrona as a city 1413 and was the union king
over Denmark, Sweden and Norway. King Erik had great love for Landskrona, the city Hven
belongs to, Erik´s ambitions was for Landskrona (the crown of the country) to be capitol city.
From Landskrona King Erik could control Öresund, the strait separating Denmark and Sweden.
This fairway that supplied all countries around the Baltic sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. King Erik
was born as Bogislav Gryf (Griffin) in Rügenwalde in what is now Poland. If you study
Landskrona Coat of Arms you find the full story. The kings crown in the top left quadrant, the
griffin from Erik’s birth name top right and the control of the waterways in the bottom left. For
all sybarites and love of akvavit you find a cornucopia to the lower right corner.
On the Erik´s Akvavit label you see Swedes fighting from west to reach the island of Hven. Just
as it has been for generations. The pearl in the strait of Öresund. This is one of the three akvavits
telling the story about the war of Hven between Sweden and Denmark.
The ingredients in this akvavit have inspiration in tinctures made since the Vikings sailed around
the world. Here are caraway and dill against flu, fennel for appetite and aniseed as aphrodisiac
and against nightmares. Old known remedies.
Keffir lime is used to balance scent and taste in the aquavit. Just as the Vikings did with their
cooking after coming home from their pillages in southern Europe. To where the citrus had spread
with the Moores from northern Africa. Fruits that contribute both scent and character.

How we make it
Erik´s Akvavit is made from Hven’s grain vodka, matured on Quercus Alba casks from USA.
After the maturation on oak, the content is divided into two parts. First part is mixed with
caraway, dill, fennel, and lime. The spirit is left to slowly extract the scent and flavor from the
botanicals. After maceration, the spirit is distilled in copper pot stills to create a clear akvavit with
a lot of character. The clear akvavit is then married with the second part of oak matured spirit.
This is done in Hven’s unique oak solera system minimum 6 months.
The color and sweetness in the akvavit come from the oak, the balance from the solera process.
Erik´s Akvavit is bottled at 40,00 %vol in the unique bottles. No color or other additives.

Scent and taste


As is, the scent is fresh from citrus and dill. It has a mature aroma of caraway and forest
meadow. The finish unfolds with a wonderful background of aniseed and fennel balanced by the
spiciness from wormwood. Oak maturation ties together the light aromas with the heavy scents.
The taste is round yet distinct. The akvavit is perceived smooth and gentle because of the oak
maturation. The acidity is clear but not too much. The bitterness is notable with a light warmth
and dryness towards the end. Aftertaste is long, full and smooth.
With marinated salmon, the creaminess and oiliness from the salmon pairs well with the gentle
bitterness from the caraway. The dill and citrus marry well with the proteins in the salmon. Anise
and fennel elevate the marinade. Dill makes a bridge between the fish and a carbohydrate.
With Ginger Ale 1:2, the carbonation lifts the flowery fruit notes and the anise surface elegantly.
The taste with the pepperiness from the ginger in the soda, marries great with the citrus and
fennel in the aquavit.

Hven, situated in the strait of Öresund between Denmark and Sweden.
The distillery hosts three still houses making everything from Vodka, Gin and Aquavit to rye-
and corn whisky as well as Single Malt Whisky. Rom and fruit distillates are also made.
The distillery also hosts its own Hotel with bar and restaurant, giving the customer and visitor
the possibility to see, understand, taste and experience the heritage of the product.
