Notes

For full NFPA compliance, a detailed schematic drawing from PIPENET is required, showing pipe labels as well as node and
nozzle labels
Reference Node at which flowrates calculated denoted by bold and with an asterisk and are always the flow outlets
To calculate Pt (2) from Pt (1) add elevation pressure and friction loss
K-Factor is considered for the nozzles only
Notes use actual labels for their pressure values
L - Pipe Length, F - Fittings Equivalent Length, Q - Special Equipment Item Equivalent Length, T - Total Equivalent Length

The hydraulic analysis was performed using the following assumptions:

1. The occupancy classification on the most demanding area is ordinary hazard group 1; hence,
the density is equal to 0.15 gpm/ft2.
2. The approach used is area density method.
3. The fire hose (Node 8) is set to have a residual pressure of 65 psi and a minimum flow rate of
100 gpm as per the recommendations of NFPA 13 and NFPA 14.

Although NFPA 13 suggests an acceptable water flow at the base of the riser for systems sized
according to pipe schedule method (Table 11.2.1.1, NFPA 13, 2013 Edition), such requirement is not
applicable when the system demand is determined using hydraulic analysis, i.e, using the density
area method or room design method with the aid of the density-area curve as indicated in NFPA 13
11.2.3.

For the analysis, the assumed design area is located on the second floor. The said area was chosen
since it is the most remote and most hydraulically demanding. Results of the hydraulic analysis show
that a pump flow rate of 525.4 gpm of water against a static pressure of 93.0 psi is sufficient enough
to meet the flow and pressure requirements.

The hydraulic horsepower of the pump is given by the following equation:

gpm( DH f )( SG)
HP 
3960
Thus,

525.4(93)(2.31)(1)
HP 
3960
HP  28.5
Assuming the pump has an over-all efficiency of 80%, the actual HP is

28.5
HP 
0.80
HP  35.63
Therefore, the Fire Pump 1 could be chosen as 40 hp.
