Building New Literacies…

Poster Write-up
The poster centers on the social issue which is on suicide. Nowadays, the number of
suicide cases have risen significantly especially among adolescents. Most common reasons
have rooted from academic failures, emotional breakdowns, feeling of isolation, depression, and
other situations which altered the mind of a person to feel helpless, and therefore ends his/her
life.
The poster can be used as a medium for the propaganda against committing suicide.
There are preventive measures shown in the poster like the yellow ribbon which is the symbol of
hope and the two hands intertwined which represents sympathy, offering of help or reaching out
to others, which can help a person reconsider things before making that decision. Also, the
cross signifies that we must have faith in life, we have to understand that all of us have our own
dark moments and struggles. Most importantly, we do not have the right to take our own life
because it is a gift from God, and it is only him who have the right to take it from us. The poster
can help reach out and help give hope to the helpless people, that they can get help as long as
they try to open up, talk about their feelings, and realize how precious life is. They just have to
talk to the right person and ask for help.
I did the poster by looking for a social issue which is relatable to students like me, and to
other people who experienced such. After that, i conceptualized how i am going to condense
different ideas through a poster, following the given criteria. Then I drafted my ideas into a paper
and polished it until it looks refined and is what I wanted it to be. Lastly, I finalized my output on
a cardboard adding few highlights and colors.
My literacy towards the society has been added with a notion that society can either help
build or kill a person. There are suicide victims who have been bullied, physically or verbally
abused, discriminated, and even threatened. These people are on the verge of mental death,
feeling helpless and ignored, blaming themselves, and losing their self-worth. We must
understand that not all suicide victims killed themselves because they wanted to escape their
problems, some chose to do it because they were pushed by other people. It wouldn’t be called
suicide, it is indirect murder because the society’s words and actions were used as a tool for a
person’s death. Nonetheless, we can help build a person by sympathizing with each other. We
don’t know, what if we are unaware but we are able to save at least one person from depression
by just smiling and greeting them. We are able to boost the self-esteem of a person by cheering
them up, and not criticizing them for their petty mistakes. Let us not be animals and prey on
each other, instead, let us be human who sympathize, love, and care. That is how we can give
hope to people who have lost their spirit to live.
