PART A-

News Reporter- Good morning, everyone and welcome to 9-5 news. Today
the Chinese region of Sichuan (sech-wan) recalls the terrible earthquake
that shaped the nation

PART B-

News Reporter- 2:28pm Local time On May 12th 2008 The Indian-Australian
& Eurasian tectonic plates collided along an estimated 249 km fault,
causing the Indian Australian plate to dislocate and move to the north.
This is what caused the geomorphic hazard to occur.

News Reporter- Sichuan is located in the direct middle of the Indian Australian plate and the
Eurasian plate therefore causing Sichuan to experience the worst effects of the collision.
Around sevral aftershocks affected Sichuan days, months and even years after the earthquake.
With a multitude of 8.0 Sichuan was largely affected socially, environmentally, and
economically

PART C-

News Reporter- Unfortunately when the earthquake hit most children were at school and most
adults were at work. Sadly, this led to approximately 46,000 reported deaths, about 374.176
reported injuries, and 18,222 people missing as of July 2008. The earthquake also left 4.8
million people without homes and an estimated 2 million people jobless. Not only did the
Sichuan earthquake have a substantial social impact but it also cost a lot economically.
Overall Sichuan industries were estimated to have suffered a loss of 204 billion RMB (local
currency) (43 billion dollars AUD). With 97 % of these losses in the central China region. Around
14,000 Industrial companies were affected and about 2 million people were left unemployed.
The environmental impact was also affected largely. Take for example china’s flora and fourna.
Most flowers and national flora got destructed
during the earthquake, and in addition to this
Sichuan also suffered many fires and gas leaks
that damaged the flora even more. but Sichuan’s
fauna was even more impacted. For example,
more than 23% of giant panda habitats were
destroyed in the hazard making pandas a much
more endangered species then they ever were. In
Addition to that Health problems for the animals
started arising due to the lack of clean water and
all the garbage and debris. Due to the impacts of
the earthquake the wildlife in Sichuan had a huge
decrease.

PART D- News Reporter- There were many people that were substantially impacted by the
Sichuan earthquake today we’ve reached out to 2 survivors who want to share their story.
This is Zhang Ming

Zhang Ming was the mother of 1 child and unfortunately because

of the earthquake she lost her 5-year-old daughter. She also
happens to be a business owner. This is how she describes her
life: “we opened this stall after we moved from Beichuan. Our old
stall in Beichuan Collapsed and we couldn’t stay there anymore”.

“My parents and my 5 yr. old daughter were still there while I worked elsewhere. They all
died 5 people in my family passed away including m y daughter. There was nothing I could
do. This was a catastrophe. “Business was no good in Beichuan. Luckily, I wasn’t alone, my
husband survived, and we now have an 11-year-old daughter. Moving on is hard but you can’t
live your whole life grieving. You must move on when my daughter was 4, she asked me a
lot about earthquakes and one night after an earthquake hit Lushan in 2013, she asked,
“mama what’s an earthquake”. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her”. The Sichuan earthquake
affected Zhang Ming substantially she had lost everything but its nice to see she’s coping.

Another story we have today is the story of Stephan Evans. This is his story: “That day was
my birthday. I worked at the local School. When the Earthquake struck all the kids held onto
the furniture. It was like an instinct. I've only been living in China for 3 years. I bet the
students are used to it. Everyone survived but unfortunately the school didn't. The children
lost their school, and I lost my job. My 2-year-old and wife survived too but it was hard. My
wife had to get a job far away and could only see us on weekends. Life has so far improved”
The Sichuan earthquakes slightly impacted Stephen’s life. These are only 2 of the many
people that were affected during the Sichuan Earthquake. PART E- Luckily for the survivors,
the Sichuan Council and Chinese Government were there to help. The Sichuan council
deployed 130,000 soldiers and other relief workers to the stricken areas to help. After they
rescued the residents, the Chinese Government promised they would rebuild all property
that was damaged/destroyed. NEWS REPORTER- That's all we have for today. Thank you for
watching and on behalf of all the team at 9-5 news, Hope you have a wonderful day, Bye.
