Risk Cargo Loading & Unloading Guideline

Control
No. 5 These guidelines are produced to assist in reducing losses for the benefit of
Nov 2016 ABB and their customers.

Cargo: Cargo can consist of anything manufactured by ABB. It may be shipped ‘naked’, such as a
transformer or Azipod, or it may be packed in a wooden crate, such as a motor or transformer
accessories.

Loading: More often than not the loading will initially consist of the cargo being physically loaded on to a
trailer by using a crane or fork lift truck. During the remainder of the transport the cargo could
be loaded on to a barge, vessel or railcar.

Unloading: This will be from any mode of transport, and normally from at least one trailer.

Loading - Points  Ensure all personnel involved are equipped with

to be considered: the correct personal protection equipment
(minimum of hard hat, high visibility vest, gloves
and steel capped boots)
 Only those involved in the operation to be in the
immediate area.
 All persons involved to understand and know how
the operation will be carried out.
 Ensure all mechanised equipment, such as a crane
or forklift, is being used within its safe working
capacity and being driven by a competent qualified
person.
 Ensure the mode of transport is in a safe location
prior to the operation commencing.
 Ensure that the weights of the cargo are known to
the crane/forklift driver.
 Mark the cargo with the centre of gravity and
weight.
 Mark the cargo where it can be safely lifted and ensure that there is sufficient capacity in
these lifting points. The lifting points could be colour coded.
 Ensure that there are sufficient strong points on the cargo to secure it, no matter which
mode of transport it will go on. These could be colour coded.
 If the cargo is packaged in a crate, then ensure that the crate and the cargo within, is
satisfactorily prepared for transportation and lifting.
 Prior to loading ensure that the mode of transport is ready in all respects and is in good
condition.
 Prior to loading ensure that timber, rubber or heavy duty anti-slip is being used so as to
create a friction co-efficient.
 On completion of loading ensure that adequate cargo securing is completed before the
mode of transport moves.

Unloading - Points  The relevant in the above section.

to be considered:  Prior to unloading, ensure the cargo securing, for at least that item that is going to be lifted,
