Graded Assignment No. 1

1. In the VW case, who is responsible for the misconduct when looking at the scandal through
the CSR lens? Is it VW as a whole? Is it senior management who set very ambitious targets
for the company? Is it the engineers who performed the actual manipulation of the
software? Which criteria would you use whether someone is responsible?

- In the VW case, it is the senior management who set very ambitious targets, is
responsible for the misconduct. As shown in the case, VW had a very centralized
company culture with emphasized power vested on the CEO. VW’s CEO played a very
central role in day to day decisions of the company. One of the main reason as to why
they cheated is the unique corporate culture of Volkswagen which is indivisible from its
German Culture. The existing culture is such that employee live and work under a
centralized hierarchy wherein they are to perform all that the senior management
asked to do, irrespective of the nature of the demand.

2. Highlight and summarize in the case narrative the following incidence or developing
situation:
 The incidence of governance-breaking: What is the issue? Who are the main actor
groups in this issue?
 The incidence of governance-taking: What is the particular phenomenon? Who are the
actor groups involved?
 The developing situation of governance-making? Describe briefly this developing
situation? Who are the main actor groups in this developing situation.
