Epic

An epic is a long, narrative poem written about a hero and the hero’s feats of bravery. In epics, the hero
represents the values of a culture, and typically, the fate of the group is in the hero’s hands. Epic heroes
are often helped by supernatural powers or forces.

Examples of Epic:

The Illiad is an Epic poem by Homer, and it describes the feats of bravery by several Greek and Trojan
heroes during the Trojan war. In the Illiad, we learn of Paris, who stole Helen of Troy, and then the great
battle that ensued between the Trojans and the Greeks.

The Odyssey Is also an epic by Homer, and it details the journey of Odysseus as he attempts to return
home to Greece after the Trojan War. Odysseus encounters many dangers on his voyage back to Greece.

Beowulf is another example of epic poetry, and is considered the national epic for the British. Beowulf
must protect his home from the monster Grendel.

Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queen is another example of British epic, which is full of allegorical
comparisons and connections between Queen Elizabeth I and King Arthur.

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” is another wonderful example of a short horror story. In the
story, the anonymous narrator tells about the murder of an old man that he has committed in cold
blood because he had ‘vulture eyes’.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

In the short story The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte sheds light on the difficulties faced by the narrator
of the story, due to depression after childbirth. Her husband John, a physician, takes her to a
countryside home for the cure and assumes that she is suffering from hysteri.

The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde

The Happy Prince is one of the best stories written in English Literature written by Oscar Wilde. The
story shows how the elites of that Kingdom neglect the poor.
Bugtong or riddles

Bugtong or Filipino riddles have been a part of the culture in the PPhilippines Riddle is a part of the
Panitikang Pilipino which is also called “palaisipan”, “pahulaan”, o “patuturan”

Legend

A legend is a genre of folklore that features stories about human events and actions.The word
“legend” comes from the Latin “legendus,” meaning “something which out to be read.” Traditionally,
legends focus on one person or place and what happens to them or in that area.

Examples:

King Arthur

The legends associated with King Arthur are some of the best-known in the Western world. He was,
legends and history suggest, a Medieval king who led the British army against invaders in the 5th and
6th centuries.

Faust is a character from a classic German legend. He’s described as a scholar who, out of
dissatisfaction, made a deal with the devil for his soul. He is promised a great deal but meets his death
after the devil takes his soul. This legend seeks to entertain as well as teach listeners a moral lesson
about pride and integrity.

The Flying Dutchman is the perfect example of a legend that has a historical origin and some facts
that help believers back up their case for its authenticity.

Mythology

Greek Mythology: Poseidon

Poseidon was the god of the sea, son of Kronos and Rhea. He became ruler of the sea when the universe
was divided after the fall of the Titans. Poseidon was bad-tempered and when he became angry, he
would cause earthquakes. He managed to upset even Hades, the ruler of the underworld.
Oration

Oration is an oral speech given by someone in front of an audience. The word oration comes from the
Latin word oratio, which means speech, and orare, which means to plead, speak or pray. It is a speech
that is usually elaborate and dignified.

Bill Clinton’s I Have Sinned Speech

In 1998, Bill Clinton gave one of his most famous speeches at the annual White House prayer breakfast.

Barack Obama’s Key Note Speech

In 2004, Barack Obama gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention that moved him to the
forefront of people’s minds for the election.Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream Speech.

Folk tales

a folktale is a story passed on by word of mouth, or a legend or myth shared among people of a culture.
The story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood. The Sisters Grimm: Once Upon a Crime,
Cinderella is an example of a folktale.
