Definition of Interview:

Interview is a purposeful face to face interaction between interviewer & interviewee for
getting, knowledge, attitude & practices in a particular issue.

According to Thersel, L. Baker- Interview is a piece of social interaction with one person
asking a number of questions & other person giving answer.

Interview is defined as a conversation with a purpose & exchange of ideas between two
people. It is a process of giving & receiving information.

Purposes of Interview:
 To obtain detail information by face to face contact.
 To obtain answer with details clarification
 To obtain personal view regarding certain issues.
 To find out various view related to topic & solve the problems.
 To gain confidence, attitude, personality & behavior of interviewee.
 To make hypothesis

Types of Interview:

1. Personal interview: personal interview includes


 Selection of the employees
 Promotion of employees
 Retirement and resignation of the employees.

2.evaluation interview: this interview that takes places annually to review the progress of
the employee is called the evaluation interview. Naturally, it is occurring between superiors
and subordinates. The main objective of this interview is to find out the strengths and
weaknesses of the employees.

3. persuasive interview: this interview is designed to understand the persuasive talent of the
employee about a product or an idea. When a sales representive talks with a target buyer,
persuasion takes in the form of convincing the target that the products need.

4. structured interview: structured interviews follow formal procedures predetermined with


an agenda or questions.

5.unstrucured interview: when the interview does not follow the formal rules or procedures.
It is called an unstructured interview. The discussion will be free-flowing and may shift
rapidly from one subject to another depending on the interests of the interviewee and the
interviewer.

6. counseling interview: this may be arranged to find out what has been troubling the
workers and why someone has not been working.
7. disciplinary interview: disciplinary interviews are occurring when an employee has been
accused of breaching the organizations rules and procedures.

8. stress interview: it is designed to place the interviewee in a stressful situation in order to


observe the interviewees reaction.

9.inforaml or conversational interview: in the conversational interview, no predetermined


questions are asked, in order to remain as open adaptable as possible to the interviewees
nature and priorities; during the interview, the interviewer goes with the flow.

10. general interview: the guided approach is intended to ensure that the same general areas
of information are collected from each interviewee this provides more focus than the
conversational approach but still allows a degree of freedom and adaptability in getting the
information from the interviewee.

11. standardized or open- ended interview: here the same open- ended questions are asked
to all interviewees; this approach facilitates faster interviews that can be more easily analyzed
and compared.

12. closed or fixed response interview: this is an interview where interviewers ask the same
questions and the interviewee is asked to choose answers from the same set of alternatives.
This format is useful for those who have not practiced interviewing.

Technique of Interview:
Conducting an interview is both an art and sciences. The steps for conducting an interview
are:

1. Establishing contact: before conducting an interview it is essential to established


contact with the interviewee.it is good to fixed date, time and place for interview.

2. Starting an interview: it is better to start with a general discussion of the problem.


The interviewer should create an environment in which the interviewee freely tells
her story. The interviewer should let the interviewee do most of the talking while he
should himself listen to it attentively guiding the interviews.

3. Securing rapport: a good rapport must be established between the interviewee and
the interviewer. Any person cannot tell personal information to the stranger at first
meeting.it requires friendly environment and has to gain confidence of the
interviewee. The interviewer should have good attitude, manner so that the
interviewee can respond to him properly.

4. Recall: at times during the course of an interview, the interviewee may be so full of
emotion that he moves away from the main subject and may even go into silence. At
such times the interviewer should give enough time to the interviewee to get back to
the main subject by recalling.
5. Probe questions: the interviewer has to be careful about side tracts in between
conversations. Great care should be taken in putting probe questions. They should
appear to the interviewee to be born of mere curiosity.

6. Encouragement: it is necessary to give encouragement to the interviewee from time


to time to make him fully confident enough to tell more information to the
interviewer.

7. Guiding the interview: sometimes the interviewee moves to less important topic.it
is the duty of the interviewer to guide the subject in the right path.

8. Recording: recording the statement should be reduced to a minimum during the


course of interview. if recording is continuing, the flow of the conversation will slow
down. So the interviewer should only have written down the importance point.

9. Closing the interview: an interview should not be ended abruptly. The interviewer
should bring the interview to a natural close by giving thanks and greeting. So that
the interviewer feels relax and comfortable.

10.report: after the interview is over, as soon as possible report should be complied
when mind is still fresh about the narration. Report should be kept in confidential file and in
up to date, manner.

7.8 Communication skills required in special circumstances


 Deal with people from different social backgrounds

People from different cultural and social backgrounds have different communication usage.

Nurses need to work with different people from those various backgrounds. Their service is

only effective if they can maintain effective communication. Nurses should consider

following points while communication with people from different socio-cultural

backgrounds.

 Develop cultural sensitivity. People can take personal offense if they feel that their
 cultural sensibilities are not respected.
 Be sensitive and be aware to nonverbal communication patterns in other cultures.
 Avoid slang, idioms, and regional sayings.
 Notice differences in communication styles and values; assume that the majority way
is the right way.
 Be aware of gestures that may be offensive or mean something different in another
 cultural contexts.
 Give proper personal space.
 Do not belittle their religion, caste, social status.
 Recognize physical cues.
 Improve listening and observational skills.
 Observe relationship differences.
 Learn about their culture, custom and language.
 Use words, pictures, and gestures to if needed.
 Explore the willingness of individuals to share thoughts, feeling and ideas.
 Identify the dominant language of the group.
 Identify dialects that may interfere with communication
 Explore contextual speech patterns of the group. What is the usual volume and tone of
speech.
 Put yourself in situation where you will meet people of other cultures.
 Listen to people tell their stories.
