Inquiry Project - Outline

You will complete the following outline as to begin brainstorming and compiling evidence for your inquiry
project. Once you are finished, you will post your outline to your blog.

Inquiry Question:
 Write the inquiry question you will be exploring.

How does play influence social

development in young children?

Reasoning:
 Write a few sentences explaining why you chose that inquiry question. Explain what interests you
about that aspect of child development.

I chose this inquiry question because I want to look at how different kinds of play have different influences
on kids’ social behaviour. I am interested to see how kids react differently with others depending on their
type of play. I also am interested to see the social development by comparing ages and the type of play set
for their age.

Evidence:
 Identify 2-3 pieces of evidence that will help you answer your inquiry question.
o Summarize what the evidence is saying in relation to your inquiry question.
 Keep track of your sources. Write the title of the website, journal, article, or magazine and
copy/paste the link of the resource in the “Resource” section of the chart below.

Evidence Resource

social environments as they grow up. children/
- social play grows the confidence of the child and this will
carry on with them as they meet more people during their
childhood.
- social play gives both (or group of children) the opportuning
to show empathy. Empath can lead them to better
understand each other and themselves. It gives them the
opportunity to see the other perspectives instead of just
seeing their own rather than the child not caring for other
opinions as it doesn’t concern them.

2.
- In this article it is shown that babies as young as 6 months https://www.eyalliance.org.uk/national-
on can benefit from social play. At this age they can interact week-play-social-play-and-its-benefits
by smiling, touching, and babbling. As much as this age is
beneficial the most important age for interaction is 3-5 years.
- At this age children are in preschool or kindergarten, and
they have more time for social interactions. At this age they
are sharing ideas and toys and learning how to follow rules
and guidelines. This social play time allows the child to learn
how to share and get along with other kids, a skill they will
need all the way into adulthood.
-In the early years of school children are learning skills like
cooperation, how to be flexible, how to take turns, how to
solve problems and how they can work and build something
together such as a partner game or challenge.

Activities:
 Come up with three activities that you would complete with your buddy. You must have one activity
that is geared towards literacy (reading/writing), one towards numeracy (math), and one craft. All
activities must be age appropriate. Remember that your buddies is in between 5 and 6 years old,
which means they cannot compete complex math or reading activities.
 Complete the chart below with the following information:
o Explanation – Explain the activity step-by-step and how you would complete it.
o Supplies – List all the supplies/materials that you would need for the activity/craft.

Activity Explanation Supplies

1. Literacy 15 photo cards with
basic images

White board
White board marker

Magnetic Letters
(optional)

TWO METHODS
METHOD 1:
Step one: Have my buddy pick out a photo card.

Step two: Begin sounding out that word and help them
pick letters that make the right sound

Step three: Have the write out the word

METHOD 2:
Step one: have my buddy read the word I’ve written by
aiding them in sounding out the right letters

Step two: have them pick out the right card that matches
the word they have just spelled out.

2. Numeracy Make the sheet o

this example and
print it off

Put sheet through

laminator or in a
plastic sheet to
make it reusable
over and over

White board marker

Print off numbers on

cards

Step one: get my buddy to pick one of the printed off number
options.
Step two: get them to fill in the place values sheet to find out
how many tens and how many ones they need (the sheet is a
visual to make it easier) instead of counting the blocks they
will fill in the blocks on the sheets.

Step three: fill in the place values section.

Step four: write out the ten place value + ones place values
and then get them to do the addition or subtraction.

I will make this sheet and print it off and then put it in a plastic
sheet making it so we can use a white board marker to color in
the place values, instead of using blocks.
3. Craft Popsicle stick

Pompoms

Eyes

Colored paper

Glue

Markers

Pipecleaners

Step one: have my buddy pick the color paper they want and
then fold the paper in half like a card.

Step two: have them put their hand down and I trace it for
them on the side where it is folded in half.

Step three: Help my buddy cut our their hand on the side
where when we unfold it, it will still be attached like “wings”

Step four: have my buddy decorate their hand like wings

Step five: glue the paper to popsicle on back

Step six: glue pom pom to front like the ‘body’ then a bigger
one for the head

Step seven: glue on eyes

Step eight: curl pipe cleaners like antennas and glue
