Chapter 10 – Pumps

I. Descriptive Summary of the Chapter

In this chapter of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers Code (2008),

tackles about the standards and regulations for all types of water pumps. These

types of standards and regulations correlate with the actual usage of every type of

water pumps as well as taking into account the safety factors involved in using

these kinds of pumps, such as specifications. This chapter also tackles about the

installation requirements of pumps which was purely based on engineering

principles, test data and field experience. In the first section of the chapter, it deals

with general explanation and purpose of the whole chapter as well as with the

general discussion of an overhead tank and the pneumatic tank

For section 2, it mainly discusses about the general pumps that you will most

likely run into at the practical field as a Mechanical Engineer. This also discusses

about definition of terms that you will mainly encounter in your line of work,

these terms include hydraulic, hydrostatics, hydrokinetics, atmospheric pressure,

vacuum, gauge pressure, absolute pressure and pressure measurements.

Discussion of pressure measurements as well as the instruments used to measure

pressure, parameters that affect the pressure. Moving on to the pumps which

include centrifugal, end suction, in line, horizontal, horizontal split-case, and

many more. It was stated in section 1 that pumps not included here must be

included in the lab tested list in order for it to be useable.

Section 3 now deals with the major classes and types of pumps used in the field of

Mechanical Engineering, it discusses the specific details of a pump. An example

of this is the centrifugal pump which has different types like axial, mixed, radial

flow and peripheral. In addition to this, parts of each type of pumps, and

classifications of each type of pumps are also discussed here. There are also

formulas here involved in the calculation for parameters such as specific speed,

affinity laws depending on what measurements are considered as constant. Other

than centrifugal pumps, rotary pumps, reciprocating pumps, and deep well pumps

are also explained in detail in this section.

In section 4, it describes the factors to be considered, if the hydraulic or

pneumatic circuitry is in metric parameters while Section 5 involves additional

Metric Pump Formula as well as example problems in order to show the reader

how to use the formulas mentioned in the chapter.

II. Assessment of the chapter in relation to the standard definition of a CODE

According to businessdictionary.com, the code of ethics is a written set of

guidelines issued by an organization to its workers and management to help them

conduct their actions in accordance with its values and ethical standards. With the

definition of a CODE defined, we must further examine the contents of the

chapter. First question to ask is if the chapter, which in this report is Chapter 10 of

the PSME Code, contains all the necessary information in order for a Mechanical

Engineer to decide for himself whether the use of a certain type of pump is

necessary and viable. The scope of the section defines that the standard deals with

the selection and installation of pumps supplying water for domestic, industrials,

for private and/or public fire protection (Chapter 10, Section 1.1, PSME Code

20008). It is seen by the definition of its scope as well as by reading through the

content of the chapter, that it certainly contains all information needed about

pump installations, pump selection as well as the technical aspect of pumps. From

Chapter 10, Section 1.2 of the PSME Code 2008, it is stated that the purpose of

this standard is to provide a reasonable degree, technical know-how, and safety.

With all that said, does the chapter answer or satisfy the requirements of the first

question? In my opinion, based on the contents of the chapter, the Chapter 10 –

Pumps of the PSME Code 2008, completely satisfies the requirements to call it

part of a CODE since it gives the target audience, which is us Mechanical

Engineers, a chance to assess the situation while keeping in mind the standards set

by the PSME enabling us to act independently as long as we abide by the rules of

the PSME Code.

III. Thoughts and Opinion Regarding the Manner of Presentation of the Chapter

Personally, I think that the sections could use some work, especially Section 3, it

would have been better if the separation between the pumps were done in this

manner, section 3 for centrifugal pumps, section 4 for rotary pumps, so on and so

forth. A diagram of each classification-type of pump with the parts labeled

properly would have been better as well for the reader in order for them to

properly visualize the actual unit that they will be handling in their line of work. I

do appreciate the fact that the PSME included the necessary formulas required in

the calculation of for each classification of pump.

IV. Relevance of the Chapter in the PSME Code

For the general principles of the code of mechanical engineer, it is stated in Rule 1

“The mechanical engineer shall, in the practice of his profession, be governed by

the Golden Rule, the ideals of service to man and his environment, and the

indispensability of unwavering public confidence in his professional competence,

integrity and humanity.” Now in relevance of that rule with the Chapter 10 –

Pumps, the scope and the purpose of Chapter 10 includes standards and

installation processes regarding Pumps, if we were to actually assess Rule 1, “the

ideals of service to man” means that the work of a mechanical engineer should

have a very high reliability when it comes to design and installation processes,

without breaking a mechanical engineer’s integrity in his line of work. Following

this chapter would mean that the Mechanical Engineer is professionally

competent, keeps their integrity as an engineer as well as being honest making

him a wholesome and great engineer all in all.

V. Improvements necessary if any

Upon reading the chapter, to be honest I learned a lot more about pumps in this

manner. Everything is compressed which is nice, only needed information was

included without confusing the reader, in this case it is me, formulas are well

arranged. All the improvements that I have mentioned in criticizing the chapter

are already included in the III part of this report, but to summarize, the chapter, in

my opinion, needs to have a better diagram, and structuring of sections. All in all,

the chapter is well written, every information necessary is included with regards

to standards and explanation of pumps in general.
