Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on 21 October 1833. His
family was descended from Olof Rudbeck, the best-known technical genius in
Sweden in the 17th century, an era in which Sweden was a great power in northern
Europe. Nobel was fluent in several languages, and wrote poetry and drama. Nobel
was also very interested in social and peace-related issues, and held views that were
considered radical during his time. Alfred Nobel’s interests are reflected in the prize
he established. Learn more about his life and his interests – science, inventions,
entrepreneurship, literature and peace work.

Why?
It is believed that the Nobel Prize was an attempt by Nobel to leave a better legacy
in the world than having improved military weaponry through his ingenuity.

How did Alfred Nobel found the Nobel Prizes?

Alfred Nobel was known to be generous in humanitarian and scientific philanthropies. In his
will, he left the bulk of his fortune in trust to establish what came to be the most highly
regarded of international awards, the Nobel Prizes.

 What is a Nobel Peace Prize?

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of
Swedish industrialist, inventor and armaments manufacturer Alfred Nobel, along with
the prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine and Literature.
What is the meaning of Nobel Prize for peace?
The will Alfred Nobel made in 1895 was inspired by belief in the community of man. The
Peace Prize was to be awarded to the person who had done most for "fraternity between
nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and
promotion of peace congresses".

Alfred Nobel showed a big interest in social issues and was engaged in the peace
movement. His acquaintance with Bertha von Suttner, who was a driving force in
the international peace movement in Europe and later awarded the Peace Prize,
influenced his views on peace. Peace was the fifth and final prize area that Nobel
mentioned in his will. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee elected
by the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget).

 Why was it created?

Why did Alfred Nobel establish a prize in his will? Alfred Nobel wanted to award
the greatest benefits to humankind.

 How Many Nobel Peace Prizes have there been awarded so far?
The first woman to receive a Nobel Peace Prize was Bertha von Suttner in 1905. Of
the 109 individual Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, 18 have been women. The Nobel Peace Prize
has been awarded 103 times to 140 Nobel Prize laureates between 1901 and 2022, 110
individuals and 30 organizations.
 What is the Norwegian Nobel Committee?
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is composed of five members appointed by the Storting
(Norwegian Parliament). The committee's composition reflects the relative strengths of the
political parties in the Storting, and is assisted by specially appointed expert advisers.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee (Norwegian: Den norske Nobelkomité) selects the
recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize each year on behalf of Swedish industrialist Alfred
Nobel's estate, based on instructions of Nobel's will.
Five members are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. In his will, Alfred Nobel tasked
the parliament of Norway with selecting the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. At the time,
Norway and Sweden were in a loose personal union. Despite its members being appointed by
Parliament, the committee is a private body tasked with awarding a private prize. In recent
decades, most committee members were retired politicians.
The committee is assisted by its secretariat, Norwegian Nobel Institute. The committee holds
their meetings in the institute's building, where the winner is also announced. Since 1990,
however, the award ceremony takes place in Oslo City Hall.

 Who can nominate the winners?

hese nominations will be submitted by members of national assemblies, governments,
and international courts of law; university chancellors, professors of social science,
history, philosophy, law and theology; leaders of peace research institutes and

each year. The purse has increased since the 1980s, when the prize money was 880,000 SEK
per prize (c. 2.6 million SEK altogether, US$350,000 today). In 2009, the monetary award
