Nobel Laureates – 2017

The nobel prize is a set of annual international awards


bestowed in several categories by swedish and Norwegian instituations in
recognization of academic, cultural or scientific advances.

The will of the swedish scientist Alfred Nobel established the prizes in 1895.
Between 1901 and 2016, the Nobel prizes and Nobel Memorial prize in economic
sciences were awarded 579 times to 911 people and organization with some
receiving the Nobel prize more than once, this makes a total of 23 organizations
and 881 individuals.

The prize ceremonies take place annually in Stockholm, Sweden (with the
exception of the peace prize which is held in Oslo, Norway ). Each recipient or
laureate, receives a gold medal, a diploma and a sum of money that has been
decided by the Nobel foundation. (As of 2017, each prize is worth SEK 9,000,000
or about US $ 1,110,000, E(Euro) 944,000, INR 72,693,900 or CNR 376,000). The
Nobel prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious award available in the fields
of literature, medicine, physics, peace, chemistry and economics.

The royal Swedish academy of Science awards the Nobel Prize in Physics, the
Nobel prize in Chemistry and the Sveriges Riksbank prize in Economic Sciences in
Memory of Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Assembly of at Karolinska Institute awards the
Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine, the Swedish Academy grants the Nobel
prize in Literature and the Nobel peace prize is awarded not by a Swedish
organization but by the Norwegian Nobel commitee.

The prizes is not awarded posthumously; However if a person is awarded


aprize and dies before receiving it, the prize may still be presented. Though the
average number of laureates per prize increased substantially during the 20th
century, a prize may not be shared among more than three peope although the
Nobel peace prize can be awareded to organizations of more than three people.

Noble Prize winners 2017:


Physics:

Rainer Weiss Barry C. Barish Kips S. Thorne

The Nobel Prize in physics was received by the American Physicists Rainer Weiss, Barry C.
Barish, Kips S. Thorne for their decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation
of gravitational waves.

Chemistry:

Jacques Dubochet Joachim Frank Richard Henderson


For chemistry, it was received by a retired Swiss Bio Physicist Jacques Dubochet, Joachim
Frank- a German born American Bio Physicist and Rihard Henderson who is a Scottish
Molecular Biologist, a Bio Physicist and a pioneer in the field of electron microscopy of
biological molecules for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high resolution structure
determination of biomolecules in solution.

Medicine:

Jeffrey C. Hall Michael Rosbash Michael W.Young

In physiology or medicine, the Prize was received by Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash- an
American genitist and a chronobiologist and Michael W.Young for their discoveries of molecular
mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.

Literature:

Kazuo Ishiguro who is an English Novelist, screen writer and a story


writer, born in Nagasaki, Japan and later moved to England won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
He has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.
Nobel Peace Prize:

Nobel Peace Prize was received by International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)
for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of
nuclear weapons and for its ground- breaking efforts to achieve a treaty- based prohibition of
such weapons.

Economics:

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize In Economic sciences in memory of Alfred


Nobel was received by the American Economist Richard H. Thaler for his
contribution to behavioural economics.
