Suppose we know that births in a hospital occur

according to Poisson process at an average rate
of 1.8 births per hour. What is the probability that
we observe 5 births in a given 2 hour interval?

If X1 and X 2 are two independent Poisson process with

parameter 1 and 2 respectively, then X 1  X 2 are
also Poisson process with 1  2 .

Example 3

A university runs two bus lines on campus: red and

green. The red line serves north campus and the
green line serves south campus with a transfer
station linking the two lines. Green buses arrive
randomly (according to the Poisson distribution)
at the transfer station every 10 minutes. Red bus
also arrive randomly every 7 minutes.
(a) What is the probability that two buses will stop
at the station during a 5 minute period ?

 (b) A student whose dormitory is located next
to the station has a class in 10 minutes.
Either bus will take the student to the
classroom building. The ride takes 5
minutes, after which the student will walk
for around three minutes to reach the
class room. What is the probability that the
student will make it to class on time?

If the number of claims handled daily by an
insurance company follows Poisson
distribution with mean 5, what is the
probability that there will be 4 claims each
in exactly 3 of the next 5 days ? Assume
