Question 1

In a lecture hall there are 4 class I boys, 6

class I girls and 6 class II boys. How many
class II girls must be present in that lecture
hall if boy and class I are to be
independent when a student is selected at
random ? Assume that there are only two
type of students in the lecture hall that is

Question 2

In 1989 there were three candidates for the

position of principal- Mr Chatterji, Mr Ayangar
and Dr Singh, whose chance of getting the
appointment are in the proportion 4:2:3
respectively. The probability that Mr Chatterji if
selected would introduce co-eduation in the
college is 0.3. The probabilities of Mr Ayangar
and Dr Singh doing the same are 0.5 and 0.8.
What is the probability that there were co-
education in the college in 1990 ?

Question 3

The contents of urns I, II and III are as

follows:
1 white, 2 black and 3 red balls
2 white, 1 black and 1 red balls
4 white, 5 black and 3 red balls
One urn is chosen at random and two balls
drawn. They happen to be white and red.

or III ? 4

Question 4

In answering a question on a multiple choice

test a student either knows the answer or
he guesses. Let P be the pr that he knows
the answer and 1-P the pr he guesses.
Assume that a student who guesses at the
answer will be correct with pr 1/5. What is
the conditional pr that a student knew the
answer to a question given that he
answered it correctly ?

Question 5

A plane is missing, and it is presumed that it

was equally likely to have gone down in
any of the 3 possible regions. Let 1-  i
denote the probability that the plane will be
found upon a search of the ith region when
plane is, in fact, in the region, i = 1; 2; 3.
What is the conditional probability that the
plane is in the ith region, given that a
search of region 1 is unsuccessful, i = 1; 2;
