La Liga Filipina was founded by Dr. Jose Rizal to foster the deepest sense of
solidarity and unity among Filipinos in the face of oppression and brutality. He
enjoyed demonstrating to Eduardo de Lete that the criticism that was made of him
in La Solidaridad was unfounded and was merely conjecture.
According to Jose Rizal, he proceeded to Malacaan Palace at 4:00 in the afternoon
to request a meeting with the Spanish governor general, General Eulogio Despujol,
Conde de Caspe. He was instructed to return the following evening at 7:00. He
arrived back in Malacaan at precisely 7:00 pm and was able to speak with Governor
General Despujol, who agreed to pardon his father but not the rest of the family
and instructed him to come back on Wednesday.
The Ilustrado Movement of Filipinos in Europe, which pushed for reforms in the
Philippines, was formally led by Dr. Jose Rizal. That is what led him to choose to go
back to the Philippines in 1885.
Rizal was referred to as "a pearl of a man" (unaperla de hombre) by Reinhold Rost,
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' librarian and an authority in Malayan languages and
customs, who was impressed by Rizal's knowledge and relationships with the
British Museum's authorities.
